Scorpios, known by Creative Loafing readers as the best dance club in Charlotte, is also known for their notoriously weird drag shows. Perhaps you're envisioning a Las Vegas-style song and dance act, but this club is in a different category of weird.
The crowd -- consisting of transvestites, a rainbow of diverse partiers and Miss Boom-Boom, the self-styled Godmamma of Charlotte drag -- is as eccentric as the premise of the show, and not to mention just as eclectic. There are couples of both orientations, straight girls paired with gay boyfriends, groups of "strickly dickly" women, flaming men in spandex, power lesbians, swingers, and gender benders alike. The sexually un-oriented crowd fills both the bar area -- being served by a team of gorgeous, buff, and (unfortunately for me) gay bartenders -- and the dance floor, which is essentially the entire club, considering there's barely anywhere to sit. And with three disco balls, strobe lights, and DJ Ghost playing hot remixed beats, it's almost impossible not to dance.
Like sex, weirdness sells, but for queens it's more than just a show -- it's cultural enrichment, a tradition and an art.
