This week we're starting a new series of interviews with local stylists in Charlotte. Check out this Q&A with Jennifer Misenheimer, a woman who does everything from hair to making outfits.
Creative Loafing: Tell us a little bit about your background.
Jennifer Misenheimer: I do a little bit of everything and anything: clothes, hair, put together looks.
I work at T. Reid & Co. as a hair stylist, which I've been doing about two years now. I've taught art and worked in retail in the past, but now I feel like I have a job that allows me to express myself creatively and interact with people.
I also make a lot of costumes and clubwear for go-go dancers and bartenders for club and themed events. When I was younger, I modeled, and that definitely plays into me styling now. When you stand in front of a camera, you don't always know how you look, so I can tell a person how to do stuff over the top and get into more high fashions.
OK, so you make clothes?
Yeah, I learned to sew as a little girl. A lot of times I'll see a piece on the rack and think about how it would look better with a zipper or something like that, so I'll buy it and modify it.
Last year The Forum had me make snow bunny costumes for their bartenders for the Bartenders' Ball. Their theme was Scandinavian Winters. Red Bull Energy Drinks saw them and asked me to make a similar costume for one of their bartenders who was doing another event, and I was able to make it over night.
So what do you think is hot right now in fashion?
I've been seeing a lot of flat boots. Some of the newer styles are pushing limits going higher above the knee, which looks good with leggings.
Also, a lot of the clothes I've been buying lately are gray. It's very wearable you can pair it with bright colors or something neutral.
My favorite thing about clothing right now is that anything goes. A lot of styles are coming back from different decades but you can incorporate them all together.
Where do you go shopping for your own stuff?
I definitely like going to the little boutiques. Boris & Natasha definitely. Some higher-end department stores. For my trendy, funkier stuff, I go to Eastland Mall. That's definitely one of Charlotte's best kept secrets. I can go in there and find a cute little dress for $10.99. And American Apparel is good to find your basics in any solid color.

We are very sorry to report that the MKT concept store in the North Davidson, (NoDa) neighborhood will be closing at the end of this month. For reasons I wont get into here it never quite took off like we expected. The best decision at this point is to focus our attention on NICHE Southend.
