Racers ... start your engines!
Dear shoppers,
It's been a tough year for us all. We've had to budget more, eat less and maybe even skip our vacations (well, I've had to, at least).
But now it's the holiday season. And news broke this morning that the number of initial filers for unemployment insurance hit its lowest since Sept. 13, 2008. Finally, some good news!
How about continuing the good cheer by going SHOPPING? Nothing stimulates the economy better than spending, and if we want our favorite locally owned stores to stick around, we've got to do some spending IN them.
We've compiled a list of Black Friday sales going down around town, many of which extend through the weekend. Readers, do your part, and stimulate the economy by contributing locally. It's the circle of life, you know?

I think for Christmas, I'm going to ask for a pair of red stilettos. This upcoming event, The Red Pump/Red Tie Affair: A Stylish World AIDS Day Event, makes me yearn for them.
From the good folks at JSW Media Group:
JSW Media Group in association with The Red Pump Project is proud to host The Red Pump/Red Tie Affair: an evening of art, fashion, food and music to commemorate World AIDS Day 2009. This years gala will take place the evening of December 1, 2009 at the elegant Palmer Building (2601 East Seventh Street near Uptown Charlotte) from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The night will feature an awards ceremony where author DeVondia Roseborough will be honored for her fearless commitment to community activism with the inaugural Red Pump Award. Roseborough is the author of "Put it on Paper," a nonfiction memoir describing her life before HIV and after AIDS, and founder of The Rasberrirose Foundation, a 501c (3) nonprofit organization whose focus is to minister to teenage girls aged 10-18, struggling from self-esteem, with a focus on HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness.
This extravaganza of fashion and style is meant to celebrate life and raise awareness through an evening of entertainment and fellowship, says Jameka Whitten, CEO of JSW Media Group and Charlottes Red Pump Project Ambassador; This is more than just a holiday party, it is a way to make a difference and support the people who need it the most.
...
A portion of the proceeds from The Red Pump/Red Tie Affair will profit The Red Pump Project, enabling them to continue their mission to raise awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls, ensuring that women are empowered with accurate knowledge about HIV/AIDS and the issues surrounding it. This will be the first Red Pump Project event in the Carolinas. To learn more visit www.theredpumpproject.com.
