Your favorite French bakery is hosting a Sweet Notions Boutique Shopping Event tomorrow, Dec. 1. Here's the info (via Amelie's Facebook):

Amelie's is hosting a Sweet Notions Boutique Shopping Event on Dec. 1, 2009, from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Here's what it's all about:

Sweet Notions collects, respects and restores beautiful accessories donated by individuals and stores around the world. Then they sell the recycled pieces through special boutique events to raise money for special causes, like a human-trafficking initiative in South-East Asia that intends to create jobs for vulnerable women.

When you shop with Sweet Notions, you have the chance to buy a unique accessory. You're being kind to the environment. And you're contributing to worthwhile projects that transform people and places.

SO WHAT CAN YOU DO?

• Root out accessories – jewelry, handbags, scarves, hats, belts, etc. – from your closets (please, no clothes) and donate them. Just bring them to Amelie's on Dec. 1. It's tax deductible!

• Come shop at the Sweet Notions boutique at Amelie's on Dec. 1!

To learn more about Sweet Notions, go to http://www.sweetnotions.org.

Shop local Black Friday sales: It's the circle of life

Posted By on Wed, Nov 25, 2009 at 12:27 PM

Dear shoppers,

It's been a tough year for us all. We've had to budget more, eat less and maybe even skip our vacations (well, I've had to, at least).

But now it's the holiday season. And news broke this morning that the number of initial filers for unemployment insurance hit its lowest since Sept. 13, 2008. Finally, some good news!

How about continuing the good cheer by going SHOPPING? Nothing stimulates the economy better than spending, and if we want our favorite locally owned stores to stick around, we've got to do some spending IN them.

We've compiled a list of Black Friday sales going down around town, many of which extend through the weekend. Readers, do your part, and stimulate the economy by contributing locally. It's the circle of life, you know?

Red pumps, ties encouraged

Posted By on Wed, Nov 25, 2009 at 10:24 AM

Red Pump WidgetI think for Christmas, I'm going to ask for a pair of red stilettos. This upcoming event,  The Red Pump/Red Tie Affair: A Stylish World AIDS Day Event, makes me yearn for them.

From the good folks at JSW Media Group:

JSW Media Group in association with The Red Pump Project is proud to host “The Red Pump/Red Tie Affair: an evening of art, fashion, food and music to commemorate World AIDS Day 2009.  This year’s gala will take place the evening of December 1, 2009 at the elegant Palmer Building (2601 East Seventh Street near Uptown Charlotte) from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.   The night will feature an awards ceremony where author DeVondia Roseborough will be honored for her fearless commitment to community activism with the inaugural “Red Pump Award.”   Roseborough is the author of "Put it on Paper," a nonfiction memoir describing her life before HIV and after AIDS, and founder of The Rasberrirose Foundation, a 501c (3) nonprofit organization whose focus is to minister to teenage girls aged 10-18, struggling from self-esteem, with a focus on HIV/AIDS prevention and awareness.

“This extravaganza of fashion and style is meant to celebrate life and raise awareness through an evening of entertainment and fellowship,” says Jameka Whitten, CEO of JSW Media Group and Charlotte’s Red Pump Project Ambassador; “This is more than just a holiday party, it is a way to make a difference and support the people who need it the most.”

...

A portion of the proceeds from The Red Pump/Red Tie Affair will profit The Red Pump Project, enabling them to continue their mission to raise awareness about the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls, ensuring that women are empowered with accurate knowledge about HIV/AIDS and the issues surrounding it. This will be the first Red Pump Project event in the Carolinas.  To learn more visit www.theredpumpproject.com.

To purchase tickets ($25 for general admission, $50 for VIP, which includes reserved seating for the fashion show and a special gift.), click here.

When: Dec. 1, 6 p.m.-9 p.m.

Where: Palmer Building, 2601 E. 7th St.

Going handmade for the holidays

Posted By on Tue, Nov 24, 2009 at 2:48 PM

The scent of peppermint and pine needle, the warmth of the crackling fires, and our wallets beginning to feel light — these are all signs of the holiday season charging toward us, full-speed ahead.

Even if you are waiting for good deals, Black Friday isn’t the only chance to find affordable gifts for your loved ones. If you are one of the few who has managed to hold off on your holiday shopping, I’m here to offer a few helpful things to make this Christmas thrifty, unique, and handmade.

Now don’t let the whole "handmade idea" scare you. Crafty or not, with web sites like Etsy and 1000 Markets, and boutiques like The Boulevard in NoDa, you can give the gift of handmade without actually getting any glue on your fingers. And for you folks who don’t mind getting your hands a little dirty, it’s not too late to start making this Christmas more personal. Here is a quick guide to getting most originality for your money.

beadedjewelry
For the ladies, you can never go wrong with jewelry. With an abundance of bead shops in the area, options are aplenty if you want to take on the task of creating something personal for your gal pal or mom. With shops like The Bead Lady and BeadLush offering up their expertise and space, you can go in, pick out all of the supplies and enjoy a little help with all of the technicalities from people who really know their stuff. BeadLush also offers premade DIY beading kits that would make excellent stocking stuffers for that lady who admires the craft but just doesn’t know where to start.
