Gift Guide: For the college student

Posted By on Fri, Dec 18, 2009 at 1:00 PM

Ahh, college. Don't you miss it sometimes? Well, I guess you don't if you're still going, like our intern Nicole Pietrantonio. While she's not your traditional party-like-a-rock-star college chick, she's still pretty cool. Here is her list of holiday gift ideas for the traditional college girl or gal.

N-Ice Rack Beer Pong Freezer Set: No one likes the taste of warm beer. The beer pong rack not only keeps brews cold throughout the game but helps hold the cups in place so they don’t get tipsy. ($19.99)

Clocky Alarm Clock On Wheels: Can’t get your ass out of bed in the morning? These clocks will have you up and running in no time. You can hit snooze only once before the alarm sounds for a second time and rolls itself off of your desk. ($50)

Violight Toothbrush Sanitizers: If you live in a dorm you can only imagine what your dorm mates will do with your toothbrush. Nasty. The traveling toothbrush sanitizer makes a great gift for college students who never know where their toothbrush might end up. ($30)

College Party Fund Jar: Because it takes a decent stash to throw a crazy bash! ($14.95)

Bar Games Drink Coasters: Who knew coasters could be used for something other than dust collectors? Hand your guests coasters as they walk in and choose from 30 games to play. Makes a good conversation starter and hey …  might even use it as a coaster. ($12.99)

Gift Guide: Movie fanatics

Posted By on Wed, Dec 16, 2009 at 5:31 PM

Our film editor Matt Brunson has a great job — he watches movies and writes about them for a living. While I'm slaving away in front of my desk doing that regular 9 to 5, he's watching some great (and some not-so-great) films. He's a true film geek, and if you know of someone who is too, maybe you should get them something from Matt's list of gift ideas below. And may the force be with you. (Or not?)

Tauntaun Sleeping Bag – Perfect for the Star Wars fan on your list, this sleeping bag is shaped like the creature that terrorized Luke Skywalker at the beginning of The Empire Strikes Back. And yes, the interior of the item is made to look like the beast’s own innards, as we saw when Han Solo cut open the Tauntaun and stuffed Luke inside. ($99.)

• Mystery Science Theater 3000: Volume XVI – The latest four-film collection not only includes a Tom Servo figurine (to match the Crow figurine issued earlier this year) but, for the sake of the season, includes among its celluloid turkeys the legendary 1959 Mexican import Santa Claus, in which the jolly fat man battles … Satan! ($64.99.)

Movie Posters – Give the gift of film art this holiday season. Movieposter.com offers all manner of movie graphics, including posters for all the latest releases. (Their current top five: The Twilight Saga: New Moon; Brothers; Disney’s A Christmas Carol; Armored; 2012.) (Prices vary)

• New Moon Action Figures – Now you can make the hunky boys of the Twilight saga do your bidding! Uh, all seven inches of them (no dirty jokes, please). (Prices vary; available at various Web sites)

Harry Potter Years 1-6 Giftset – The latest Potter adventure, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, has just been released on DVD, but if you know someone who doesn’t own any of the films in the series, how about picking up this cost-conscious collection that includes all six magical movies? ($69.98)

Gift Guide: Music lovers

Posted By on Tue, Dec 15, 2009 at 2:23 PM

Charlotte is full of music lovers, as evidenced by the diverse mix of music venues all over town. And no one is a bigger music lover than CL Music Editor Jeff Hahne. (By the way, this week's cover story is a compilation of photos he's taken at concerts this past year. There are a LOT.) In fact, a few weeks ago, he received a Grateful Dead-Opoly game (see below) in a press kit, and he was practically bouncing in excitement. OK, maybe not bouncing, but I think he was pretty excited. Here are his five picks for gift ideas for the music lover in your life.

• Local CDs. Transmission Fields, Harvard, GogoPilot and plenty of others have released albums in the last few weeks, and this year. Support the local scene while giving someone something great to listen to.

Pint glasses and bobble heads for a variety of bands, such as Bob Marley and Jimi Hendrix, are available at Manifest Discs in Charlotte.

Grateful Dead-Opoly — Everyone else has their version of Monopoly so, why not a version for The Dead where you can buy and sell different albums and music venues. It's officially licensed by the band, too.

Puzzles_Games_Grateful_Dead_-_Deadopoly_Game

• iTunes gift card. Stop trying to push off your crappy music onto your friends ... or maybe they want to secretly buy something by Miley Cyrus or the Backstreet Boys. You don't want to be seen buying their album, so give them this instead.

• Music lessons. Maybe someone who know wants to learn how to play music, or maybe they think they can play, but really suck. Either way, there are lots of locals that give lessons and can teach you what a G string really is ... on a guitar.
