B.F.F.: Bracelets are fashionable forever

Posted By on Tue, Jul 31, 2012 at 2:06 PM

Assuming you’re over the age of 18, dear reader, you are now experiencing the first taste of what it’s like to feel old. Anything from your childhood is practically vintage now, looked back on with both a fondness and a sense of disbelief that you ever fell victim to its trends. So when we saw the latest resurrection, a la Pinterest and boutique jewelry stores, it was a blast from the past.

Friendship bracelets? Are we really going there? Admittedly, it could be worse. But you can’t tell me the fashion world is so desperate that they had to look back to its painful childhood. It digs up memories of the tiny woven bracelets gathered on your wrist until they were hanging by a thread, just like your friendship. BEST FRIENDS FOREVER! And now you can’t even remember the poor girl's name.

We were skeptical, we’ll admit. But for those of you scared of commitment, you’ll change your mind when you see the new take on friendship bracelets. These colorful and intricate bracelets are making a big comeback, according to New York accessories designer Amanda Judge. The classic handmade friendship bracelet has stepped up its game with added extras like studs, chains and rhinestones that are easy to admire but even easier to make.

For example, raid your grandma’s sewing basket for some embroidery thread, or hit up Michael’s for a rainbow of colors. Priced around 50 cents per bundle, you can’t go wrong. Unexpected color combinations are the most eye-catching, meant to call attention in a nonchalant and innocent way. Friendship bracelets are carefree, just like you were back in the day.

If you’ve lost your sixth sense for crafting, there are plenty of tutorials out there, like this one, so you can pick your pattern. (Or just find any 12-year-old girl.)

Customizing is what will set these bad boys apart from the average middle schooler’s wrist. Rhinestones can be glued to the top of the bracelet for a touch of glitz. Silver skull charms are also a popular fixture right now; weave one in so it sits as the centerpiece of your bracelet. Or if you’re the type who gets frustrated halfway through a project, you’re in luck: Tie your half-finished bracelet to a few links of an oversized gold chain for a luxe bracelet that’s at least half-homemade. If you’re really popular and have too many friends and not enough time, you can also buy the accessorized bracelets online or in stores.

And just in case you’re still doubting the coolness, vamped up friendship bracelets have been spotted on the likes of Nicole Richie, Miley Cyrus, and our personal style goddess, Lauren Conrad.

So we’ll let this one slide. But don’t expect us to get behind the resurrection of the mood ring, or fanny packs. That’s where we draw the line.
