Drunk Gab: What I overheard one night in the next stall

Posted By on Tue, Jun 30, 2015 at 1:30 PM

“Just because I’m gay and I smoke weed, doesn’t mean I can’t believe in fiscal policy.” — overheard drunk gab from someone identifying as Republican.

One of the funniest aspects of going out as often as I do is overhearing, and being a part of, drunk conversations. Over the past couple of months, I decided to spend more time listening to my friends and the people around me so I could share some of my favorite quotes in an article. The experience I’ve had has been absolutely hilarious. From overhearing drunk political debates on legalizing marijuana to corny pickup lines.

As conversations continue about Kaitlyn Jenner, Orange is the New Black and the recent passing of same-sex marriage legislation, sexuality is at the top of the list for drunk people to gab about. From overhearing, “I’m not a lesbian, I just like to get drunk and make out with my friends” to “I would totally be gay for Ruby Rose,” I have heard it all. Would you believe there are even corny lesbian dinosaur jokes? “Have you ever heard of the lesbian dinosaur? Lickalotapus.”

Are you afraid of the dark?

Posted By on Tue, Jun 23, 2015 at 1:49 PM

I think the last scary movie I saw was The Conjuring. As a child, I was beyond terrified of Chucky. Annabelle, the demonic doll featured in the movie of the same name, convinced me I didn’t need to watch any more scary movies until I was married. But for a couple of months now, I have been looking for things to do around Charlotte at night, outside of the bar or club.

I came across a Groupon for two to “Nightmares Around Elm Street” by Carolina History & Haunts. My cousin and I had been looking for something to do before going out, and for $15 it sounded like a steal.

I took a glance at the website, and the first thing I saw was, “Are you afraid of ghosts?” Even though my answer was yes, I thought it would be a fun experience. Also, my cousin was going to be sleeping at my place, so I knew I’d be alright. Not to mention, I have been looking for a condo for the past couple of months and I thought it might be smart to explore where any haunted parts of Charlotte might be.

I'm coming!: Piedmont Social House

Posted By on Tue, Jun 16, 2015 at 11:51 AM

It’s a hot Thursday and I am standing in a huge space decked out with aluminum stools, leather couches and recycled crates. It is the epitome of Southern charm in a nightlife venue. “This place is for leisure seekers,” says Nicole Miller, Marketing and Events Sales Manager for Piedmont Social House, a new entertainment and event space in Ayrsley.

About a month ago, I was alerted about a new QC hangout, which goes by PSH for short — sounds like a cool ending to a handshake — but my inbox got so crowded that I didn’t end up seeing it until last week. I know, terrible. But Nicole was super chill about it and excited about giving me a tour, so I couldn’t cancel even though I was beyond exhausted from the usual weeks of working a 9-to-5, bringing work home, dating, nightlife meetings and the occasional after-work drink, or three.

Needless to say, the work day dragged on and I anticipated having to be social yet again. While at lunch I decided to pick up a few copies of Creative Loafing — so I could stalk myself, of course. I ended up getting ink all over my white tank, so I turned it inside out. No big deal, except the strings that are there to help you hang a tank, and its two tags, were dangling about. I planned on cutting them, but decided I would put Nicole to the test — was she going to stare at the top the whole time or carry on as if life was normal? (Spoiler alert: She carried on as normal because she’s the ish — or psh?).

Abari merges an arcade with cocktails, craft beer

Posted By on Tue, Jun 9, 2015 at 12:10 PM

Have you ever wondered if you would ever be able to play your fave classic Nintendo 64 game again? Most of us either tossed, lost or misplaced our favorite childhood games and game systems long ago. Whether you are feeling nostalgic or a true gamer, I have some good news for you. Abari Game Bar, the first of it’s kind in the Q.C., is slated to open this summer. Not only will you be able to reminisce on the classics, but you’ll be able to do it while drinking craft beer and cocktails. The arcade gods have finally answered gamers’ prayers and trust me you should be geeked!

Last week, my cousin and I headed to Growlers Pourhouse in NoDa where we were going to chat with the innovator of Abari, Zach Pulliam, and one of his close friends. I had FB messaged the business page a couple weeks earlier, and after re-scheduling a meetup, I was finally going to get the scoop on the new arcade bar.

It wasn’t until we were already in our Uber and on our way there that I realized how awkward it is to describe yourself to someone via text. What is proper protocol? Do you take the time to describe everything you are wearing? I started typing, “Not sure how to say this but it’ll be two black girls lol...” Before I could make up my mind on whether or not to send, we were there and I decided on, “I’m here!” with the hope that he would see the text as soon as we walked in.

Nervous if we would have to exchange a series of awkward texts before finding one another, I went straight to the bar. Luckily, while there I overheard the bartender address someone as Zach shortly after we ordered. I asked him if he was the same Zach that was opening the new game bar and to my relief he said yes. #crisisaverted

We grabbed a high top table and after a couple long gulps we jumped right in to the interview. I’m not going to lie, I was slightly worried that an owner of an arcade bar may not be as outgoing as I was, but that’s not Zach. He started out somewhat reserved yet down-to-earth (where did that saying come from anyways) and from exchanging numbers I found out he was from the best area code N.C. has to offer outside of the 704, you got it 336!

Located at 1721 N. Davidson St. and flashing local street art, Abari — the name comes from the fusion of “a bar” and “Atari” the popular game maker — will feature 27 arcade games, seven pinball machines and four console games in a 1500-square-foot space. They will have around eight taps with local craft beer, cocktails and $1.50 PBR. Now that’s what I call a gamer’s heaven. Guests will have to start a tab (whether partaking in spirits or not) in order to obtain access to each game and the cost for play is a matter of fishing out all those old quarters laying around your car.

A couple beers later, I was reminiscing about going to the laundromat as a young buck with my mom. In a feeble attempt to take my mind of the dreaded nature of the laundromat, we would play a Pac-Man/Galaga machine. To this day, while everyone else is playing darts, I never miss a chance to play that game when I spot one at a bar (so far in Charlotte I’ve played at the Gin Mill, Blind Pig and Tin Roof).

I asked him about some of his favorite arcade games that will be featured — among them were Donkey Kong 3 and X-Men (6 player), but it was clear after we started talking that finding a favorite among the wide variety of games they have acquired is close to impossible. Later on, his friend exclaimed, “It’s like Chuck E. Cheese’s!” But this time the adults really get to play. Don’t worry though parents, the bar will be kid-friendly between 12 and 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, so family fun is still a possibility.

The exact date for the opening of Abari isn’t pinned down yet. As with every great adventure, there have been obstacles along the way, but in Lil’ Wayne fashion — “Sorry for the Wait” mixtape reference — you can rest assured that once it does, it will add something special to the eclectic vibe on NoDa. Get ready to play gamers!

Learn more about Abari Game Bar and be the first to find out when they are opening by checking out their website at abarigamebar.com, following them on instagram @abarigamebar or liking them on Facebook.

Loving the new Local

Posted By on Tue, Jun 2, 2015 at 12:57 PM

After a slow morning following a stint at Friday Live at the N.C. Music Factory and a long day of condo hunting (yes, I think I’m in the Queen City to stay), the only thing I wanted to do was take a nap. But as soon as I charged my phone, I had a text from the partner in crime (P.I.C.) asking me to join her on the rooftop at Gin Mill. We haven’t been able to see each other much and she just got a new job, and so, with that, duty called.

I threw on something that was probably a combination of something I had worn the two nights before, but this time with heels just in case this turned into an “uptown night.” We all know heading uptown, at least to the EpiCentre on a Saturday, means following a dress code, so I wanted to be prepared.

I chatted with the P.I.C. and her new co-workers for a bit and just as the sun went down and the patio started to get crowded, I asked where the next move was. One of the guys who had asked me to look into the best spots for those in their late-20s to mid-30s suggested we head uptown, but pointed out he was wearing flip flops and uninterested in the EpiCentre. I was excited when he said he would be down to go to The Local.
