Spot Shots: Knocturnal @ Snug Harbor

Posted By on Wed, Jul 29, 2015 at 1:12 PM

Knocturnal is the embodiment of hip-hop. On any Monday night at Snug Harbor, you'll find a b-boy cypher (breakdancing) in front of the stage backed by hip-hop and funky breaks played by Knocturnal creator, Justin Aswell and resident DJ A-Minor (Andre Barden).

Every first Monday of the month, cyphers battle it out for prizes which range from cash to concert tickets. After midnight, the b-boy dance floor moves to the back of the room to make way for a dance party that lasts until the club closes at 2 a.m. There's also an emcee cypher and, like the B-boys, be prepared to get called out if you want to participate, though in the end, it's all love. At 1 a.m., resident DJ Collectr (Will Gilreath) plays a range of dance music from house to techno to close out the night.

If that's not enough, Knocturnal has also brought in its share of hip-hop's finest — Geto Boys, Kool Keith, Slick Rick, Gift of Gab and Homeboy Sandman are just some of the artists who have graced the stage.

What continues to draw people to Knocturnal is the format — incorporating a variety of elements into one night so that no one gets bored. While any true hip hop head enjoys hearing good freestyle and battle rap, people also want to dance and keeping those people happy is what could be the difference in a thriving hip hop night and a slowly flopping one.

Knocturnal is at Snug Harbor every Monday night from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. with a $2 cover.

In love with my co-cos

Posted By on Tue, Jul 28, 2015 at 12:39 PM

For hump day last week, one of my co-workers had a spa party. In desperate need of some QT (quiet time) and a pre-game spot before heading off to trivia at Kennedy’s Premium Bar & Grill in Elizabeth, I grabbed a bottle of wine from the gas station and headed on over to her place.

Five hours later, at close to midnight, I am sitting on the patio in deep political conversation with the last co-worker standing — everyone else was smart enough to think about how quickly 8:30 a.m. was going to come. Even though he’s one of my most favorite humans, we are total opposites in so many ways. And yet somehow, we managed to get through an entire convo about Obama, the confederate flag and fiscal policy with a smile on our faces. And though I knew a hangover was in the works, knowing I wouldn’t be the only one at least gave me a silver lining.

Sure enough, the next morning after contemplating not brushing my teeth — because I was worried the smallest gag could set me on an hour long session hugging the toilet — I walked past all of my coworkers seen the night before giving them the biggest side-eye.

Shortly thereafter, I posted a Facebook video labeled “When I Wake Up Still Drunk” with a little boy with bedhead screaming at the top of his lungs. I tagged every single one of my coworkers and declared — “I’m seriously done.” By “done,” I was referring to drinking with them during the week, only to be asked several times throughout the remainder of the day, “Wanna head to AA5 later?” You would think we’ve known each other forever.

Crazy from the heat

Posted By on Tue, Jul 21, 2015 at 10:33 AM

With summer temperatures staying firm at 90-plus in the Queen City, it is freaking hot. Not to mention the humidity will make any straight hair curl real quick. All winter we wait for the warm spring air and, for the past couple of years, it’s gone from freezing to scorching in a matter of weeks. You know it’s too hot when you don’t even feel like going to the pool because you know the walk alone will take everything out of you. So, I asked around and here’s some local faves that Charlotteans take advantage of when you can fry an egg on the sidewalk.

The Lake: Anyone who read my article on my adventure to Lake Norman for a brewery tour, knows I think the lake is a death trap. But I understand that if it’s super-hot that staying in the water is the lesser of two evils for some. Add the breeze and a few brews and you have a great day ahead of you. Whether you’re going to Lake Wylie or Lake Norman, both are a blast (even for those of us that prefer to stay on the boat and not get in the water). Don’t know someone with a boat? Rent one. Or book a booze cruise and see what lake fun is all about. You won’t catch me kayaking or tubing, but MAYBE I’ll venture to a sandbar and get in. Watch out for the gators at Wylie, no I’m serious.

U.S. National Whitewater Center: Though water works are not my thing — Hey, after my near death experience on Lake Norman two years, ago can you blame me? — I’ve heard good things about the Whitewater Center’s festivals and live music events. River Jam happens every Thursday and Saturday from May through September. Apparently, they have good food and craft beer selection — sorry to burst your bubble, but it’s not BYOB. For the more adventurous folks, they also have kayaking, canoeing, canopy tours, races and more! There’s something for everyone here, even nature-averse, bug-spraying me.

Old School Sprinkler Fun at a House Party: Before the summer is over, I am begging my friend with the huge house (flashback to my article on phases of a house party) to have a water-themed party where we create some sort of water park. I’m sure you’ve happened upon the viral videos of waterslide kickball or water slide flip cup. This is an awesome way to stay cool in the summer heat without having to even leave the house. PSA: There’s something called “Slide the City” that is happening in other areas across the country. Literally a 1,000 foot long water slide that spans the length of a city street. I don’t know what’s keeping it from Charlotte (the Website says “coming soon”), but can we petition to make it happen faster? There is one coming up in August in Salisbury, which is just a hop, skip and a jump away.

Art Gallery or Museum Crawl: Don’t get me wrong. I’m not an art snob — I can’t tell you why some paintings sell for thousands of dollars, but I can tell you Charlotte has enough art to go around. From the local murals on hundreds of buildings throughout the city to the Mint Museum to the Harvey B. Gantt Center for African American Arts + Culture. An art crawl could last all day, and you know the A/C will always be on fleek (on point, amazing, great — have you not heard this term yet?) when art is around. Personally Twenty-Two located on Central Ave in Plaza Midwood is one of the coolest art galleries I have been to. For one, some nights they have $1 pints! I will say though, some of the art I’ve seen there may make you just as hot inside as it is outside, so beware!

Indoor Fun and Games: Maybe you’re trying to stay out of the heat completely. Charlotte has plenty of indoor venues that would be fun to check out during the day. Of course, you can always hit up a movie, but I would suggest Dave & Buster’s for arcade games, food and drinks. Want to step it up a notch? I want to check out Victory Lane Indoor Karting Center for indoor go kart racing! Or come with me to play at Exit Strategy where apparently the end goal is to “escape the room” through a series of games. Don’t know if claustrophobia is common but I’ve heard that the experience is awesome.

What’s your “Exit Strategy” for escaping the overwhelming North Carolina summer heat in the Q.C.? I know the possibilities are close to endless. Coming up: I’m going to crash parties at some of Uptown’s favorite apartment complex pools! #poolcrashers

On the party bus to DMB

Posted By on Tue, Jul 14, 2015 at 11:18 AM

I’ve literally snoozed six times since my alarm started going off and all I can think is, “Is it possible to still be hungover from the Dave Matthews Band concert?” And I think the answer is yes.

A couple of months ago my co-workers invited me to go to the concert at PNC Music Pavilion. They were able to convince me because they spent so much time chatting about how much fun they had on a party bus that took them last year. I had flashbacks to the last time I was on a party bus from N.Y.C. to Atlantic City which ended up with me making snow angels in the middle of a casino and someone getting arrested. Yep, it was about time for a redo.

The funny thing is, I don’t know anything about Dave Matthews Band. Was it just one person? A one-man band? I’m assuming country music? While at work some of my friends would play a song saying, “You’ve definitely heard of DMB before.” Nope, not one song rang a bell, but after committing to the purchase of a $38 lawn seat, there’s no way I was missing out. Apparently, DMB doesn’t go on Groupon.

You are what you drink

Posted By on Tue, Jul 7, 2015 at 9:56 AM

The Sunday after a long week is so depressing. And this past weekend was no different considering my weekend got started at 5:32 p.m. on the dot when I left work and headed off to Thirsty Thursday at the Knights’ game. Unlike the Greensboro Grasshoppers — Greensboro’s minor league baseball team — who feature $1 beer on Thursdays, the Knights’ stadium charges $3.50. Unsure if the size of the cup, price and amount of refills necessary were actually cheaper than purchasing the $12 tall boy, I decided a 24-ounce can and two less trips to the counter were worth it. When I was deciding on which beer I was going to indulge in, out of 6 or so limited options, I began to wonder how people are perceived based on their go-to drink.

Which is cooler, Bud or Miller? There’s Redd’s for $1 more... but does that mean I can’t handle the taste of beer or I’m too good for it? I can’t tell you how many times a guy has seen me grab a beer — let’s be honest, I was grabbing two, who doesn’t double fist? — and then had a comment along the lines of, “I love a woman who can drink beer.” As if I needed the validation... But hey, no offense fellas. I think the same thing about you when you grab a Blue Motorcycle... don’t forget the lemon! *hair flip and a side eye*

So, I decided to poll a few friends on their first thoughts when they see or hear different people order a particular drink. Granted a lot of other factors come into play, but, based on my drink choices, I guess I would be classified as a cheap party girl? Take a look at a few of the popular drinks on tap among QC nightlifers.
