Five years later, Bush says Iraq war must go on: President Bush marked the fifth anniversary of the Iraq war on Wednesday. "The answers are clear to me," Bush said in a speech at the Pentagon on Wednesday, five years from the day the war began in 2003. "Removing Saddam Hussein from power was the right decision, and this is a fight America can and must win." Earlier this month, two economists wrote a column suggesting that the war will wind up costing the United States more than $3 trillion. In his speech, Bush called the projected cost "exaggerated."

Homes, roads, flights, washed out: Hundreds of flights were grounded Wednesday as heavy rains soaked the middle of the country this week. The National Weather service called for flash flood advisories from Texas to Ohio, with tornado watches in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Airport workers scrambled to get displaced travelers home. Airport spokesman Ken Capps said, "The airlines will be working the lines early to try to get as many people rebooked and out of here as quickly as possible."

Obama visits Charlotte; expect some delays: Sen. Barack Obama’s visit to the Queen City will cause delays in Uptown today. The senator will be speaking at the Grady Cole Center to a packed house. There are no more tickets to the event, and even those with tickets are not guaranteed entry. Seating is on a first come first serve basis. Obama makes his visit to Charlotte just weeks before the North Carolina primary.

Pakistan assembly set to elect first woman speaker: Fehmida Mirza, 51, a medical doctor from a political family from Sindh province, is expected to easily defeat a candidate from the main party that backs President Pervez Musharraf. Mirza is a member of slain political activists Benazir Bhutto's Pakistan People’s party. "I am honored, I am humbled and happy," Mirza told reporters shortly before voting began.
