Duke tower: Topless in Uptown

Posted By on Fri, May 1, 2009 at 11:14 AM

An update on the ever-changing landscape of SimCity Charlotte:

Steel work at the top of the 48-story Duke Energy Center has progressed slowly since late October and left passers-by curious about what appears to be couple of pointy cat's ears.

Something obviously is missing: the piece the development team has nicknamed the “handlebar.”

It's a 160-foot-long, 130,000-pound steel truss that will fit between the two architectural ears, creating a see-through “sky window.”

SteelFab Inc., which has been assembling the truss for about three months off Old Dowd Road near the airport, will slice it into six sections and truck them to the construction site beginning in mid-May.

The Q.C. skyline is about to look very different. Ready?
