Local queen speeds ahead in drag race

Posted By on Mon, Jul 6, 2009 at 12:28 PM

Shane Windmeyer is a man on a mission to change the world .. in high heels. He is a man of many faces — advocate, author, speaker, and at times, drag queen.

In his drag persona, Buff Faye, Windmeyer has beaten out over 700 drag queens across the country to become one of the top 25 contenders for season two of RuPaul’s Drag Race on Logo Network. “RuPaul is one of my favorite entertainers,” says Windmeyer. “I loved watching season one. I felt like the online competition was a great way to get the word out [about Campus Pride].”

Windmeyer is the founder of Campus Pride, the leading national nonprofit organization for student leaders and campus groups working to create a safer environment for LGBT students. A native of Hiawatha, Kansas, Windmeyer moved to Charlotte in 1997 and worked at UNC Charlotte for five years.  Windmeyer’s LGBT advocacy through Campus Pride has made him not only a local name, but a national icon.

In order to win the online competition, Buff Faye must earn enough votes to come in first place. “I am quite proud of being in the final round of the race," he says. "It would be a dream to be number one and go on the show to represent Campus Pride and LGBT youth.”

Along with Campus Pride, Windmeyer is passionate about other causes such as breast cancer awareness, MADD, and AIDS/HIV awareness. “You can do a lot wearing high heels and a dress,” says Windmeyer.  “I believe drag queens have shaped our world by advocating for all causes, LGBT and otherwise. I would use any national visibility to do just that — be a voice for those that are silenced or do not have a voice.”
