Cast your vote for Classical Idol

Posted By on Sat, Mar 24, 2012 at 7:00 AM

As you've probably already heard (specifically in last weeks CL news story, cleverly titled "Bittersweet Charlotte Symphony"), the Charlotte Symphony is hurtin'. Financial woes are putting its very existence into jeopardy (Yikes!). Keeping all that in mind, The Symphony Guild of Charlotte — a nonprofit organization promoting symphonic music and providing financial and volunteer support to the Charlotte Symphony — needs your help. Proceeds raised from its Classical Idol on Saturday (March 24) go towards supporting enrichment projects including youth orchestra summer music camp and scholarships, as well as the entire orchestra fam.

Not to mention, this event sounds pretty darn cool. The competition features small Charlotte-area ensembles performing a mix of instrumentals in genres like jazz, folk, tango, bluegrass, gospel, classical (duh) and more. A panel of guest judges and the audience (via text voting) determine the winners. $60 and up. Pre-concert reception at 6:30 p.m.; program begins at 7:30 p.m. Knight Theater, 430 S. Tryon St. 704-372-1000. www.blumenthalarts.org.
