Mary Chapin Carpenter playing Knight Theater tonight (2/21/13)

Mary Chapin Carpenter

Today's Mary Chapin Carpenter is not the Mary Chapin Carpenter of 1992's Come On Come On, with hits like "I Feel Lucky" and Lucinda Williams' "Passionate Kisses." Modern Mary is a good deal more subdued - by illness, by divorce and by grief. While her themes are more somber these days, her voice hasn't suffered a bit in the decades since she released what has become her most popular record. There's a reason the woman has five Grammys, two Country Music Awards and two accolades from the Academy of Country Music; she writes damn fine songs. Her shows today may not share the saloon romp feel of years past, but there's real beauty in the searching melancholy of MCC's latest offering, Ashes and Roses. With Shawn Colvin. $39.50-$54.50. Feb. 21, 7:30 p.m. Knight Theater, 430 S. Tryon St. 704-372-1000.
