Coheed and Cambria

New York's favorite space cadets are touring in support of their newly released album, The Afterman: Descension, the sequel to Coheed and Cambria's 2012 album The Afterman: Ascension. Confused? Those in the know have been following singer/writer Claudio Sanchez's convoluted, epic sci-fi storylines since the band's first studio album, The Second Stage Turbine Blade, released 10 years ago. With an empire that spans comics, a novel and a possible movie, the science fiction-inspired prog/pop-rock band's ambition sometimes crumbles under the weight of its backstory, but ultimately it's about the music. Veering between pop songs, dreamy musical interludes and the occasional shredfest, Coheed and Cambria's music can be as accessible as it is alienating for the casual listener. Sanchez is undoubtedly the main draw of the band, with his instantly recognizable falsetto and trademark afro, which seems to be slowly consuming him. Coheed and Cambria may not be the easiest band to get into, but they're worth checking out for anyone not afraid to try something different. With Between The Buried and Me, Russian Circles. Sold out. March 11, 8 p.m. The Fillmore, 1000 N.C. Music Factory Blvd. 704-916-8970.
