West Charlotte High School football coach D'amon Maurice “Mo” Collins died early Sunday “after an unexpected illness,” Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools announced in a brief statement. Collins, 38, a West Charlotte graduate who played football at the University of Florida and later six seasons with the NFL’s Oakland Raiders, was named West Charlotte’s head coach last summer. He had been receiving dialysis treatments for kidney failure. He is the second area football coach to die in recent weeks.
Democrat Hillary Clinton helped Sen. Kay Hagan put a spotlight on women’s issues – and handled a heckler – at Saturday's rally at the Charlotte Convention Center.
The next few weeks could play a key role in determining future charter school policies in North Carolina. Organizers with the NC Public Charter Schools Association are hosting three meetings around the state, including one Nov. 12 in Mooresville to prepare their legislative agenda for next year, and they want the public to give their input.
