First Drip (10/30/14): Hornets Win, A Better Halloween, more

Wednesday night’s season opener saw the biggest comeback in Charlotte NBA history. The Hornets trailed by 24 midway through the third quarter but point guard Kemba Walker made two huge shots. The first one forced overtime, and the second won the game with five seconds on the clock, to make a 108-106 victory against the Milwaukee Bucks.

Early voting in North Carolina is seeing a higher turnout than in previous midterm elections, despite the General Assembly’s move last year to shorten the early voting period from 17 days to 10. Researchers say one of the main drivers is the white-hot race between incumbent Sen. Kay Hagan and Thom Tillis. So far, these early voters appear to be giving Democrats the edge.

Immigrants make their way to America to try and create a better life for themselves, and they'll take any job available to do it. That's exactly what happened in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy. The dirtiest and most dangerous jobs were given to day laborers, most of them immigrants and most of them undocumented. David Noriega of BuzzFeed tracked down nearly two dozen of those workers, who came from Mexico as well as countries in Central and South America.

In case you have it confused, Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) is not Halloween, and it’s offensive to paint your face like a sugar skull just to get wasted Friday night. Get some background on this sacred family-oriented tradition and consider honoring your own dead ancestors instead.
