First Drip (12/08/14): Panthers break losing streak, Gitmo prisoners go to Uruguay

For Panthers fans, this was the vindication for believing every week, for watching the 2014 team lose six times by 18 or more points. Even an end-zone brawl sparked by Cam Newton's touchdown celebration couldn't dampen Carolina's 31-point victory over the New Orleans Saints.

Mary L. Landrieu, the last Deep South Democrat in the United States Senate, was defeated in a runoff election in Baton Rouge, Louisiana Saturday by Bill Cassidy, a Republican congressman who incessantly attacked the incumbent for her support of President Obama.

The United States transferred six detainees from the Guantánamo Bay prison to Uruguay this weekend, the Defense Department announced early Sunday. It was the largest single group of inmates to depart the wartime prison in Cuba since 2009, and the first to be resettled in South America.

The element of surprise was lost in a failed U.S. military raid to rescue two hostages being held by al Qaeda militants in Yemen, a senior Defense Department official said Saturday. American photojournalist Luke Somers and South African Pierre Korkie, a "respected teacher" who was to be released on Sunday, were fatally shot in the compound by a terrorist as the secret mission unfolded, a U.S. official said.

Tropical storm Hagupit is heading to Manila, but has been downgraded from a typhoon after crossing the Phillipines. At least 21 people were killed by the storm, the Red Cross said, with the eastern island of Samar worst hit, but it caused far less damage than feared.
