Firefighters were busy battling flames at the home of Carolina Panthers' head coach Ron Rivera in south Charlotte early Monday morning. Crews responded to the 2-alarm fire at the house on Heydon Hall Circle just after 4 a.m. and found heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. Rivera's family and dog managed to escape to safety.

Stuart Scott, a longtime anchor at ESPN, died Sunday morning at the age of 49 due to complications from cancer. Stuart went to R.J. Reynolds High in Winston-Salem and then the University of North Carolina, and his career path took him from Florence, South Carolina to Raleigh, to Orlando and ultimately ESPN's SportsCenter. Scott regularly covered the NBA and the NFL. He was well-loved for his energy, catchphrases and use of black cultural references in broadcasts.

Officer Tyler Lee, who was working a private security shift at Buffalo Wild Wings which is connected to the NASCAR Hall of Fame, on Sunday morning shot and seriously injured a man who began choking him during the altercation, police said. Lee fired three shots, all of which struck the man. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police hadn’t identified the man accused of assaulting the officer, but they said he was in Carolinas Medical Center late Sunday in critical but stable condition. Police Chief Rodney Monroe said more than 20 people witnessed the incident, which happened about 1:45 a.m. CMPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau will conduct a separate investigation.

Charlotte’s Cowfish Sushi Burger Bar made Business Insider’s list of the 50 coolest new businesses in America for its signature “Burgushi” dishes. Cowfish, located at 4310 Sharon Road, is the only business from North Carolina to make the list.

Pope Francis named 15 new cardinals from 14 countries on Sunday, continuing his efforts to diversify the church hierarchy and extend the global reach of the church. Many of the new bishops and archbishops come from countries like Myanmar, Tonga and the Cape Verde islands that have never had a cardinal, Vatican officials said. In all, nine of those named Sunday come from developing countries and the remaining five are European. It is a group representing “every continent, to manifest the indissoluble links between the Church of Rome and the particular churches present in the world,” the pope said.
