It took 32 years, almost the length of his short life, for activists to secure a federal holiday honoring Dr. Martin Luther King. The bill faced tough opposition, led by North Carolina's Jesse Helms, who sought to unseal FBI surveillance tapes presumably revealing King's premarital affairs as a way to derail its passage. In 2000, South Carolina became the last state to recognize MLK Day as a paid holiday.

A$AP Yams, a member of A$AP Mob who oversaw the rise of A$AP Rocky, has died. The 26-year-old rapper's group members deny he died of a drug overdose.

Despite GOP opposition, President Obama will outline his proposal to increase taxes on the nation's one percent during Tuesday's State of the Union address.

It is estimated that up to 80 people were kidnapped by Boko Haram in Cameroon Sunday, army officials say. The group, which has killed thousands with the goal of establishing an Islamist state in northern Nigeria, has also targeted Chad and Niger in the past year.
