First Drip (1/27/15): Is Google Fiber finally coming to Charlotte?, more

Google sure knows how to tease a city. Will we find out today if the super fast Google fiber will come to Charlotte? A press conference is scheduled this afternoon.

City Council approved the $7 million needed to equip CMPD with body cameras — despite concerns over money. "Chief Rodney Monroe urged council to approve the measure and mentioned the results of a citizens' satisfaction survey that said 79 percent of citizens surveyed supported equipping officers with the body cameras," reports WSOC.

A "battle royale" is expected to erupt when the Obama administration announces it will allow oil drilling off the coasts of Virginia and the Carolinas, says a senior fellow in the Energy Security and Climate Initiative at the Brookings Institution. The announcement is expected to come later today.

Today marks 70 years since the liberation of Auschwitz, the death camp where Jews, Gypsies and others were killed during World War II. Russian President Vladimir Putin, noticeably, will not be in attendance at any of the ceremonies marking the anniversary.
