First Drip (6/12/15): Ritz-Carlton to face lawsuit over CIAA fee

The North Carolina attorney general's office announced yesterday they will be filing a lawsuit against the Ritz-Carlton seeking financial compensation for customers who were charged a "convenience fee" during the CIAA tournament in February. During the tournament, Ritz-Carlton guests were charged a 15 percent surcharge to bar and restaurant orders that was listed as "CIAA Svc. Chg." on receipts, and some took to social media with complaints, which led to media coverage.
A water main break on Church Street has shut down 101 Independence Center and a portion of the street for the entire day while crews work to get it fixed. The road buckled on Church Street between Trade and Fifth streets due to the 12-inch drinking water pipe breaking.
CMPD has charged 24-year-old Joshua Brownlee with murder in the case of a double murder in northeast Charlotte on Tuesday night. Police also said they have identified and interviewed a second person of interest in the shooting deaths of Matthew Brown and Mykeijaa Tucker, but have not made any other arrests yet.
Local lawmakers say a proposed law in the N.C. Senate that would shift taxpayer money from urban areas to rural areas could cost Mecklenburg County $12 million a year and the city of Charlotte $5 million annually. The proposal is part of a broader rewrite of a House economic development bill. In the latest version of the proposal, the state would distribute 20 percent of revenues based on where sales occur and 80 percent based on a county's population. Gov. Pat McCrory called the proposal "class warfare."
A teenager survived a shark attack at Ocean Isle Beach in southeast North Carolina on Thursday afternoon, the town's mayor said. The girl reportedly had three to four minor lacerations but nothing serious. A witness said the shark appeared to be about four feet long.
