News Lunch Break (10/15/15): Obama will not withdraw troops from Afghanistan

At a press conference held at the White House late this morning, President Obama announced he will yet again push back the scale-down of troops in Afghanistan, keeping the current levels (about 9,800 troops) steady through 2016. Obama had planned to reduce troop levels to 5,500 by the end of this year and have an "embassy only" presence by the end of 2016. 


Governor Pat McCrory will be in Charlotte this afternoon to sign a bill requiring health insurance companies to cover certain autism treatments for children into law. McCrory's expected to sign the bill at the Charlotte-mecklenburg Government Center at 1 p.m. The North Carolina Chamber of Commerce opposed the bill, claiming it would raise insurance premiums and hurt small businesses. 

A woman who was killed by a vehicle that drove into her yard in Cabarrus County yesterday is being praised by police who say she saved her husband's life, yelling at him to get out of the way before she was struck. Evelyn Tarlton, 74, was planting bushes in her from yard when 26-year-old Shane Stanley crossed the center line at Highway 200 and Vanderburg Drive, crossing through Tarlton's neighbor's yard before coming into hers. 

A Union County woman filed a lawsuit against the county's board of education yesterday, claiming the school system did nothing to stop her daughter from being sexually assaulted by another student on school property. The incidents, which reportedly took place between two female students at Kensington Elementary, began in October 2012. The victim's family was not notified of the incident, and the suspect continued to approach the victim despite being removed from her class, according to the lawsuit. The victim's family is suing for damages, including the cost of psychological treatment. 

Officials have declared Novant Health Rowan Medical Center bed bug-free after an emergency room patient brought the bugs into the hospital earlier this week, which led to an infestation at the Salisbury hospital. The local health department confirmed that the hospital followed protocol and that the infestation was exterminated. Novant Health also followed up with patients who had bed bugs and paid for extermination work, replacement bedding, clothes, etc.
