Lunch Break (11/16/15): Students at USC walk out to demand equality

Some University of South Carolina students have followed a long list of student activists to protest inequalities on campuses across the country by staging a walk-out this morning. A group calling itself "USC 2020 Vision" created a list of 12 demands to USC President Harris Pastides that focus on racial inequality as well as non-discrimination against transgender people. The students began the walk-out at 11 a.m., as was called for in the petition listing the demands, and are marching from Longstreet Theatre to the Osborne Administration Building.

— Hannah Jeffrey (@hannahjeffrey34) November 16, 2015Police are still looking for the suspect in a shooting that occurred outside of a Simmons mattress plant in north Charlotte this morning. Officers responded to the plant, located on West WT Harris Boulevard near Old Statesville Road, at around 6 a.m. and reportedly found one victim with life-threatening injuries, who was then transported to Carolinas Medical Center.

The officers reportedly showed up to the scene of the fire on Mount Holly-Huntersville Road at about 12:30 a.m. attempted to carry an elderly man out of the home after he attempted to put the fire out himself. A third person was also transported to the hospital, but it is unclear whether it was the elderly man mentioned above. Three people live in the home, and everyone made it out of the fire unharmed.

— Huntersville Fire (@Huntersville_FD) November 16, 2015Preliminary construction work began this morning on the controversial toll lanes to be added to I-77 after last-ditch efforts from groups opposed to the project failed over the weekend. Residents and business owners from the Lake Norman area called on Governor Pat McCrory to terminate the state's contract with Cintra, who will build and maintain the toll lanes. McCrory deferred to local leaders on the subject, and it looks as if the project, which is slated to be completed by late 2018, will go on as planned.

Officials said Medics tried to save Savion Barrow on the ride to the hospital after finding him shot in the home but were unable to do so. There is no word yet on how the boy got the gun, but another child and an adult were reportedly in the house at the time of the accident.
