News Lunch Break (12/3/15): Teenager arrested in overnight shooting at elementary school playground

Police arrested a teenager in the murder case of a woman shot and killed near an elementary school in east Charlotte overnight. Police issued warrants for Montez Stephon McLaurin, 18, after an investigation, and he was taken into custody by the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team the morning. Officials said the victim, 35-year-old Angel Marie Carlton, was not affiliated with Lawrence Orr Elementary School. The shooting reportedly happened near the school's playground at around 10:30 p.m. last night. (WBTV News Staff) 

SAF Technologies will be hosting an "active shooter conference" today at the Mint Museum in southeast Charlotte, on the heels of yet another American mass shooting yesterday. Police are still investigating motives in the killing of 14 people by Syed Farook and Tashfeen Malik in San Bernardino, California, the 355th American mass shooting in 2015. A first-grade teacher from Sandy Hook Elementary who has been credited as a hero for saving her 15 students' lives will be speaking at today's private conference, which was planned before yesterday's shootings. Yesterday's shooting, along with other terror threats across the globe, will reportedly play a part in the city of Charlotte's coming decision to name the ACC Championship, to be played at Bank of America Stadium on Saturday, an extraordinary event. There are 73,000 people expected to attend the game, and the "extraordinary event" title will allow police to tighten security and restrict people from carrying certain things around the stadium. The Union County District Attorney's office has announced that Kilah Davenport's stepfather pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the case of the four-year-old's 2014 death. Joshua Houser had already pled guilty to felony child abuse in February 2014 for throwing Davenport against a wall, causing blunt force trauma to the head. He was sentenced to seven to 10 years in prison for that offense. Davenport died a month later of pneumonia that was reportedly brought on by the trauma. (Fox46 Staff) Kilah's Law, passed in May 2014, extended minimum prison sentences for felonious child abuse charges.
