Lunch Break (3/16/16): Obama nominates Supreme Court justice, Republicans huff and puff

President Obama held a press conference this morning announcing the nomination of Merrick B. Garland to become the nation's 113th Supreme Court justice. Garland has in the past been well-liked on both sides of the aisle, but Republicans have nevertheless promised to block his nomination – and any other Obama nomination – despite that pesky Constitution. Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump secured North Carolina in yesterday’s primary, which saw a turnout of over 2.3 million voters (35% of the state population). There were plenty of other local candidates on the ballot yesterday, and you can see here how each of them did.  (Madeline Lemieux) 

Raleigh City Council voted in favor of outfitting 600 police officers with body cameras yesterday, following backlash for the police shooting of Akiel Denkins, 24, last month. The plan to implement body cameras, proposed by police chief Cassandra Deck-Brown, will initially cost the city an estimated $1.25 million, and then about $1 million a year to maintain. Raleigh’s decision comes a year after Charlotte City Council approved a plan to put body cameras on every officer. (Paul Specht, Charlotte Observer)

One woman is in the hospital with minor injuries after rolling her SUV in a single-car crash early this morning on the I-485 inner loop near Mount Holly Road. Officers continue to investigate the crash, but initial reports suggest that the woman lost control of her vehicle, causing the SUV to flip. The crash occurred around 2 a.m. (Ashton Pellom, WBTV) 

A Gastonia man identified as Ricky Adams Townsend has been arrested in connection with alleged attempted kidnappings originally reported in that area last week. After multiple children reported a man luring them to a black Dodge Dart, parents took their concerns to social media. The information in those posts helped police identify Townsend. They arrested him while driving in the Dart near Dallas. In addition to the attempted kidnapping charges, he was found in possession of marijuana. Townsend is now in custody at Gaston County Jail, with bond set at $500,000. (Fox46 Staff)
