Lunch Break (4/7/16): Police investigating city's 13th murder in northwest Charlotte

Police are investigating a murder that occurred this morning in northwest Charlotte near Mount Holly. According to a CMPD release, officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call on Helms Road at 5:18 a.m. and found a man suffering from a gunshot wound. The victim's identity has not been released. No suspect has yet been arrested in the case. (Ryan Pitkin)

As a seemingly stubborn response to the economic blowback resulting from the North Carolina legislature's passing of N.C. House Bill 2, a state senator in South Carolina has now proposed a bill for his state that would bar local governments from requiring businesses to allow transgender people to use the bathroom of the gender they identify with. When asked about S.C. Sen. Lee Bright's proposal, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley shot down the idea as unnecessary, and it doesn't seem to have much support from the rest of the South Carolina legislature, either. Police have said a street race is what led to a head-on wreck that injured two people in west Charlotte early this morning. Two brothers, whose names have not been released, were allegedly racing on Mulberry Church Road near Billy Graham Parkway when one tried to pass the other, striking a woman head-on. The woman was sent to the hospital with serious injuries. The man went to the hospital with minor injuries. Both brothers are facing charges. (Ashton Pellom, WBTV)

Both the driver and passenger in a tractor-trailer wreck that shut down lanes on I-85 for much of the day yesterday have passed away, the North Carolina Highway Patrol announced this morning. Christopher Dyer and Rodney Watson were aboard the 18-wheeler, which wrecked on I-85 northbound near North Tryon Street at around 5 a.m. yesterday morning. The wreck closed down the two right lanes of I-85 northbound until late yesterday afternoon and caused traffic problems throughout the day. (Fox46 Staff)
