Whether they know it or not, Charlotte film lovers owe a debt of gratitude to the late Robert West. A lifelong devotee, producer and supporter of filmmaking, West died June 6 in Wilmington, NC, of Glioblastoma Multiforme (MFB), a form of terminal brain cancer. West was diagnosed in fall 2012 and had stepped down from his executive director position in early 2013.
From 1985 to 1999, West was curator of film and video at the Mint Museum in Charlotte. He led a renowned media program that began the Charlotte Film & Video Festival, a national independent film festival, and organized national touring film programs for documentaries featuring social justice issues. The Mint position cemented West's reputation and he was a frequent presence - as board member, arts funder, juror and idea guy - for a variety of statewide and national arts groups, including the National Endowment for the Arts, the NC Arts Council, the Sundance Film Festival and PBS. He was also a board member of the National Alliance for Media Arts and Culture.
Local film critics Matt Brunson of Creative Loafing and Sean O'Connell of CinemaBlend.com will discuss summer movies on Charlotte Talks, with Mike Collins, airing at 9 a.m. Wednesday, June 12, on WFAE.
The two Charlotte reviewers will offer their takes on the seasonal flicks they've already seen, such as Man of Steel, Before Midnight and Star Trek Into Darkness, as well as preview upcoming titles like World War Z, The East and The Lone Ranger.
One of the themes for this show will be the heavy use of CGI in summer blockbusters. Joining the Charlotte gang by phone will be Erik Nash, a visual effects supervisor who's been Oscar-nominated for his work on I, Robot and Real Steel and who has also worked on such blockbusters as Titanic, The Avengers and this summer's Iron Man 3.

There's a reason the counterculture favorite 2001: A Space Odyssey was released back in 1968 with the tagline "The Ultimate Trip." I can't promise any trippy drugs will be on hand, but I can guarantee a great motion picture experience will potentially take place at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, June 20, at AMC Concord Mills.
I say "potentially" because the folks at The Film Find are trying to set up a screening of this Stanley Kubrick masterpiece through Tugg, which can only solidify showings if enough people reserve tickets. (For clear details on how Tugg works, go here.) As of this moment, 69 more people are needed to make this screening happen; the deadline for reserving tickets is June 13.
Admission is $10. The event will also include door prizes and a possible post-screening Q&A session. For more details, or to reserve seats, go here.
This monthly column offers a sampling of the major releases coming soon to Blu-ray and/or DVD.
