N.C.'s health care townhall disrupted in Rocky Mount

Posted By on Wed, Aug 12, 2009 at 11:24 AM

We've been watching the wave of rowdy hecklers at meetings across the nation, it was only a matter of time before they hit our state.

They obviously got the memo about being disruptive. Too bad they didn't get the memo that they've been bought and paid for by Washington lobbyists bent on keeping hardworking Americans under Big Business' thumb.

Amid heckling and boos Tuesday night, North Carolina held its first congressional health-care forum since the issue has become a national flash point.

Congressman G. K. Butterfield was continually interrupted by jeers as he voiced support for President Barack Obama's health-care plan that seems to have increasingly polarized the country in recent days. Tuesday's two-hour forum in a steamy Rocky Mount middle school gymnasium was marked by frequent sharp exchanges.

"Read it!" shouted one man, speaking of the House health-care reform.

"How do you know I haven't read it?" Butterfield shot back.

He was pummeled with questions about whether the health- care legislation would benefit illegal immigrants, about whether he would give up his own congressional health insurance plan, whether he would vote for something unconstitutional, and whether it would allow abortion.

Butterfield, a career judge, maintained his composure.

North Carolina is stupid

Posted By on Wed, Aug 12, 2009 at 10:31 AM

We laugh about South Carolina and all of it's woes, but a recent poll shows that there are just as many idiots living in the Tar Heel State.

Barely half of N.C. voters believe President Obama was born in the United States, according to a poll released Tuesday.

Public Policy Polling surveyed 749 North Carolina voters Aug. 4-10, and found that 54 percent believe that Obama was born in the United States. Twenty-six percent of those surveyed said they do not believe Obama was born in the U.S., and 20 percent said they were not sure.

The survey found that only 24 percent of Republican voters in North Carolina believe Obama was born in the U.S.

The poll had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.

Conservative critics of Obama contend he is not a natural-born U.S. citizen and, therefore, not eligible to be president.

Let's be real, the only reason "conservatives" [read white folks] want to believe President Obama isn't US born is because they don't want a black president.

Hawaii is a state of this union and that is where President Barack Obama was born.

Are we truly to believe George W. Bush was a C-student in college when he couldn't pronounce nuclear? We believe Bush was taken by surprise on 9-11, but think that Obama was born in an African village?

Wake up North Carolina, Obama is the president and if you don't like it, the borders are open for you to leave.

GEICO dumps Glenn Beck

Posted By on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 6:15 PM

beck-geico-text.webp

The Gecko has dumped its caveman. No, not one of those GEICO spokesmen, we mean Glenn Beck. GEICO has become the fifth company in two weeks to drop its advertising from the Glenn Beck show on FoxNews.

Beck, the, ahem, free-wheeling, teary, and, in this writer's view, obviously psychologically troubled news entertainer (even conservative comedian Dennis Miller calls Beck “pretty shaky") saw the shit hit the fan recently after he told a national audience that Pres. Obama “has a deep-seated hatred of white people.” A campaign to urge Beck’s advertisers to drop his show began practically the next day, led by a group called Color of Change. The companies in question are not pulling money from FoxNews per se, but rather redistributing it to other Fox shows, ostensibly until those hosts garner national attention, like Beck, for engaging in dangerously irresponsible rhetoric. Hey, wait a minute, if that’s the case, how does Sean Hannity (“He dares ask the questions other reporters are too smart to ask”) still have advertisers at all? For more information on the anti-Glenn Beck “campaign,” go here.

Meghan McCain, the future of the GOP?

Posted By on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 3:38 PM

Sen. John McCain's daughter, Meghan (aka McCainBloggette on Twitter and elsewhere) is tired of Conservative pundits, like Michelle Malkin and Ann Coulter -- to name two -- telling her to shut up.

While Meghan's busy trying to draw more people into the Republican party, recognizing new ideas and the need for an infusion of young people and diversity in the aging, mostly white party of crank and grump, others are freaking out because she's speaking her mind. You know, exercising her Constitutional right to free speech afforded under the First Amendment.

Meghan is young, it's true. She's got the McCain party genes (in more ways than one). She's got a lot to learn. But, something else she has that many of her far-right comrades don't is common sense. For example, she writes stuff like this: "We will not get anywhere by continuing to sell hate and fear."

While the Republican party seems to want, more and more, to silence any opposition -- which is the opposite of what's needed in a democracy -- Meghan McCain is standing her ground and continuing to speak her mind.

Kudos to her. It's for that reason that she's a rising Republican star, whether the Republicans want her help or not.

Michelle Malkin, the conservative pundit and author of the recent book Culture of Corruption: Obama and His Team of Tax Cheats, Crooks, and Cronies, was asked during a live chat on Politico’s The Arena on Friday which conservative political figure or commentator needs to shut up. Guess who her answer was? Yeah, that’s right—yours truly.

So Michelle Malkin successfully rounds out the trifecta of extreme female conservative pundits, following Laura Ingraham and Ann Coulter, who believe that I, and Republicans like me, need to shut up and get out of the party. Is this surprising? Not really, given my father’s complicated history with the extreme right of the GOP. But what confuses me is this: Malkin recently posted an item on her blog about how “drowning out opposing views is simply un-American.”

What do Malkin and the other conservative pundits hope to accomplish by arguing that people “like me” have no place within the Republican Party? And who exactly are people “like me”? Young people? Moderate people? Young female people? People with tattoos who go to biker rallies?

However, I am consistently asked why I would want to stay in a party that has members so angry about my involvement. It’s as simple as this: I idealistically believe in the Republican Party, and I also have an emotional connection to it. But if the party continues to demand that people leave, I guarantee you that they will. If you tell people there is no place for them, they aren’t going to fight for their right to stay. They are going to rush into the open arms of the other team.

More from The Daily Beast.

My horror complex

Posted By on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 3:38 PM

Hostel

My love-hate relationship with horror flicks — the more ridiculous and over-the-top the better — stretches back to my earliest experiences with movies, more specifically my earliest experiences with movie rental stores. I’d wander away from the classic film and musical section from which most of my family’s rentals originated, and peek around the corner at the horror aisle. The peeking and hiding would continue for a few minutes, until I worked up the nerve to actually step within the two rows and surround myself with the worst images imaginable to my 8-year-old eye — knife-wielding prom queens, bloody masked villains, and of course the ubiquitous doomed camp counselors. I’d take my time considering which VHS case to pick up and look at both sides of, gingerly lift one off the shelf, turn it over to see the two or three additional photographic promises of the gore within the tape, and quickly shove it back on the shelf and run to find my mom. Twelve hours later, I’d inevitably wake up with nightmares.

Anita's Animal Adventures: Chapter 1 – "Going Batty"

Posted By on Tue, Aug 11, 2009 at 3:31 PM

Our resident Listings Editor, Anita Overcash, loves animals. No. I mean, looooovvvveesss animals. And she seems to have encounters with critters all the time — like, way more than the average human. As a result, we thought it only made sense to have her start blogging about her meetings with creatures (both great and small) in a news series of blog posts titled: "Anita's Animal Adventures."

I have a tendency to stay up much longer than I should during the week (concerts, movies, TV, socializing, exercising, and browsing Facebook, all contribute to keeping me occupied and not sleeping). This leads to the usual downfall of me being rather sleepy and of course, wondering sometimes whether or not I’m losing my mind. So, it should come as no surprise that when I was awakened early in the wee hours of the morning by strange scratching type sounds outside my bedroom window, I was confused and alarmed, as I hurriedly stumbled out of bed and let my eyes adjust to the darkness.

Looking out the window, without my contacts in I didn’t see very much. I was, as the ol’ saying goes, “Blind as a bat.” I did see the shape of a small creature fly past by window and then to my astonishment hit my window head on. "OK, that kind of freaked me out." So, I decided to hop back into bed for some ZZZZs and to ignore whatever was capturing my attention. One thing was for sure: It was still dark, and I wasn’t going outside to check it out until daylight.

So what was it? Well, the next morning I saw nothing as I stood outside of the house and stared up at my bedroom window, located underneath the gable vent of the attic, which my room sits under. Later, however I would learn from a large amount of poop (yuck!) in the driveway below (and a family member's exploration of the attic), that what I had heard and kind of seen was a bat. But, there wasn’t just one “hanging out” near my room. More than 50 of the small creatures were taking refuge in the gable vent I had stared at earlier and thought was "way too small for any creature to fit."

From research I have done since this animal adventure, I have learned that bats love small, hard-to-get-into spaces. It makes them feel safe from predators while they are sleeping. Ahhh ... isn’t that what we all want?
