Love Obama, but ...

Posted By on Fri, Oct 9, 2009 at 11:00 AM

President Barack Obama wins the Nobel Peace Prize. For what exactly? He's only been in office for a mere 9 months and is talking about sending more troops to Afghanistan. Did I hit my head on something? Talk about a set-up? This is worse than being nominated for an Oscar for your first film or performance. Marlee Mattlin or John Singleton, anyone? Things can only go downhill when there is no opportunity for one to grow. Some will see this as a victory. I see it as a farce in a world where people assign greatness in areas where people have yet to even tap their true potential.

Red Rove-r Red Rove-r

Posted By on Mon, Sep 21, 2009 at 9:55 AM

I had the displeasure of attending a school function where Karl Rove was speaking. While I disagree philosophically on many points that Rove made, what was more interesting was the protesters that tried to talk over him. It was ridiculous. The cynic in me says that he is now able to see when zealots ruin places of real conversation, like a town hall meeting, by being boisterous, disruptive and bullies, but the realist in me really wanted to hear what he had to say -- so it was rude and unnecessary. I will say this, whichever side of the aisle one belongs, the crazy energy in that room is enough to make me stay away from ANY politician in the very near future.

Farewell Patrick Swayze

Posted By on Fri, Sep 18, 2009 at 9:52 AM

Surprise, surprise. I am also a Patrick Swayze fan. I loved him in the Outsiders, Red Dawn, Dirty Dancing, Ghost, City of Joy, and yes Point Break. Yes, I said it Point Break and whenever they show it in syndication I watch it. Why? Because Swayze's characters are reflective of what I perceive him to be — a strong man, who does not give up, regardless of the odds against.  The spirit that allowed him to fight pancreatic cancer for 20 months, is the same spirit that informs his characters. He will be missed, but not forgotten.

Rep. Joe Wilson should not cast stones

Posted By on Thu, Sep 10, 2009 at 9:40 AM

No one should ever call the President of the United States a liar, especially during a live speech. S.C. Rep. Joe Wilson lost his mind yesterday when he did just that, which would have made sense if in fact he had said that to Gov. Sanford, Lt. Gov. Bauer and former Chair of the State Board of Education Kristin Maguire -- all proven liars. The only difference is that they happen to be Republican and white. It is so sad when a Congressman can't keep his racism in check.

Ted Kennedy: The lion takes a rest

Posted By on Thu, Aug 27, 2009 at 2:08 PM

Ted Kennedy died yesterday and I must say that I am sad. No, he was not perfect, but he was consistent. Luckily for many he did not become president but was allowed to work in the Senate, paving the way for the Voting Rights Act, Immigration Act of 1965 and the Anti-Apartheid Act, which called for sanctions against South Africa, pressuring the country to end it's racist regime. He symbolized what a senator should be: a man who works hard for his constituents and the world community. Ted Kennedy was one in a million and his leadership in the Senate will be truly missed.

Microsoft goes hard: Racism in advertising

Posted By on Thu, Aug 27, 2009 at 9:08 AM

Microsoft swapped out a black man's head for a white man's head because they felt the people of Poland would not be able to relate to a black person in a business meeting. I know that there aren't a lot of Blacks in Poland, but that isn't giving Polish people a lot of credit. They cite racism in Poland as the cause. Really. Perhaps it's racism in the people making the creative decisions that is the cause? I suspect there's no causal link between advertisers who dare to determine what people can and cannot imagine, and racism against blacks that is a mainstay in Poland. I guess the Microsoft folks never thought that this ad with a black person in it could send a message of equality. Instead they cater to the familiar — racism in advertising and society.

Winning at a 'man's' game

Posted By on Wed, Aug 19, 2009 at 5:46 PM

OK, so the IAAF has asked the South African athletics federation to conduct a gender verification test on 800-meter runner Caster Semenya amid concerns she does not meet the requirements to compete as a woman. She's 18 years old and they think she might be a man because of her incredible performance beating out the world champion. The judges don't think that she's cheating, just that she doesn't know that she's actually a man. This is the oddest coupling, pun intended, that I have ever heard. She will have to submit to a battery of test to prove that she is a woman. Something doesn't sound right about this at all. If she has been competing as a woman her entire life, why question her gender now? I guess women can outrun each other but not discrimination.

Sotomayor rocks!

Posted By on Thu, May 28, 2009 at 12:11 PM

Enough with the hate already. Sonia Sotomayor is clearly qualified and is one of the most interesting Supreme Court Nominees in history. The Bronx. Princeton. Yale. Married. Divorced. Appointed by H.W. Bush. Promoted by Bill Clinton. Nominated to be the H.L.I.C. by the H.B.I.C. English. Spanish. Nuyorican. Boricua. What? I cannot wait to see what this phenomenal woman does on the court.

Wanda Sykes takes a fall

Posted By on Tue, May 12, 2009 at 2:11 PM

Why exactly is the White House distancing itself from Wanda Sykes? Had they not heard her stand-up before? She dissed Rush Limbaugh, who continually disses and mocks President Obama, and she's wrong? Okay. I'm going to need the Obama White House to man-up and to stop getting punked by Republicans, especially at White House events. She is funny, gay, liberal and always takes on the Republicans in her stand-up. Did they really think she was going to curb her enthusiasm for taking on Limbaugh and Cheney? The White House needs to get a sense of humor.

Give A-Rod a Rest

Posted By on Mon, May 4, 2009 at 5:05 PM

I am tired of hearing about steroids and baseball. There is yet another tell-all book about A-Rod's use of steroids out. This time it claims that he used as a teenager. Are you surprised? It is the actual demand for perfection from athletes that drives them to do stupid things like take steroids. Baseball is not, nor has it ever been the pristine sport that it pretends to be. If people were not so obsessed with athletes breaking records and performing above and beyond normal standards, then there would be less of a need to cheat or take steroids. No, I’m not blaming the fans, I’m just saying that our hands are not exactly clean in this scandal.
