North Korea's Lil' Kim

Posted By on Thu, Apr 30, 2009 at 10:47 AM

Will someone please have a conversation with Kim Jong-Il before he blows himself up and then us. He's clearly crazy or is he? If we can meet with our former "enemies," Cuba and Venezuela, then we can chat with Lil' Kim, who desperately wants some attention. If not a meeting, a conversation might work. Ignoring him is not working and he may just have to be dealt with, sooner rather than later.

Ernie Barnes dies

Posted By on Wed, Apr 29, 2009 at 4:47 PM

One of the most prolific and pioneering artists of the 20th century has died. Ernie Barnes was truly a renaissance man, having played professional football and becoming a world-renowned artist post-retirement. Most people remember him for his iconic painting that was part of the television series Good Times' closing credits. "Sugar Shack" is one of his most famous paintings, making the cover of Marvin Gaye's classic album I Want You (1976).  Barnes' elongated figures and distinctive style will be missed.

South Africa barred the Dalai Lama? WTF?

Posted By on Fri, Mar 27, 2009 at 8:54 AM

South Africa has barred the Dalai Lama from a peace conference in Johannesburg this week, hoping to keep good relations with trading partner China. Can we say absolutely crazy?

If you didn't know before, you should know by now that China owns a whole lot of Africa, including South Africa. What's crazy is that a man who is known for peace worldwide is being banned from a country whose system of Apartheid was upheld by trade practices with China. Further, South Africa just granted "minority" status to the Chinese so that they can benefit from empowerment programs. What does that mean? They are considered black and anyone that knows anything about South Africa knows that this is HIGHLY problematic.

Shame on South Africa for again upholding tyranny instead of using its cultural and economic capital to insist that democratic principles are upheld worldwide. Oh but that's right, South Africa is a socialist country masquerading as a Democracy which is why this makes perfect sense.

New York State Sen. Hiram Monserrate is dead wrong

Posted By on Tue, Mar 24, 2009 at 3:35 PM

On Monday, New York State Sen. Hiram Monserrate was indicted on charges of slashing his girlfriend's face with a broken glass in a fight in his Queens apartment building.

According to the New York Daily News, the grand jury charged Monserrate with three counts of felony assault on his girlfriend, Karla Giraldo and three counts of misdemeanor assault. The former Democratic city council member is to be arraigned this week. He faces up to seven years in prison, if convicted.

Why are we just hearing about this? While the entire world has been focused on the Chris Brown and Rihanna incident, a state senator allegedly slashes his girlfriend's face and there has been very little about it outside of the state of New York. Why is this not national news?

While I am certainly not in support of Chris Brown, I find it interesting whom the media decides to put on

blast and whom they decide to protect. By the way, he still has not resigned. Just wrong. Dead wrong.

Don't cry for me Rihanna

Posted By on Fri, Mar 20, 2009 at 1:11 PM

It's times like this that we remember that some pop stars are children.

Rihanna is sticking by Chris Brown, event though the entire free world has told her to leave. There is the old adage that a hard head makes a soft behind.  Well, it looks like this statement is applicable to Rihanna, pun intended.

Hopefully, she'll get it together for her sake and ours, because I'm tired of hearing about it.

Mind your manners

Posted By on Mon, Mar 16, 2009 at 12:59 PM

Folks are out of hand.

If I go into the ladies room one more time and hear someone on a cell phone discussing private matters, I'll scream. Some of these lovely ladies have the nerve to talk on their cell phones while using the facilities. As my 5-year-old nephew would say, "Ewwwwwwwww."

Common sense would dictate that cell phones should be left in the office, and common courtesy would dictate that we would be spared from hearing the tawdry details of their lives. Give the cell phone a rest, at least in the toilet, and mind your manners.

Gospel gone wild

Posted By on Fri, Mar 13, 2009 at 12:29 PM

Clutch the pearls — Bebe Winans, a member of the first-family of Gospel music, the Winans, has been arrested for domestic violence. Funny how this story about Oprah's boy didn't come out until she, Tyra

and Dr. Phil did simultaneous stories about domestic violence just yesterday. Maybe it's a coincidence? I think not.

Funny how, although Winans was arrested on February 13, 2009, we haven't heard about it until literally one month later. Funny how radio stations haven't been threatening to burn his CDs or stop playing them

although he reportedly pushed his wife to the ground.  Funny how people want to pray for this grown man while throwing two young (you know who) people under the bus.

Good girl gone bad

Posted By on Tue, Mar 10, 2009 at 3:59 PM

It seems as if pop princess Rihanna's last album title was appropos. She has taken back Chris "Hitman" Brown after he literally beat the shit out of her in the middle of the street. Wow. Even pop stars have low self-esteem, and she could definitely move on — i.e. have any other dude that she wants. Unfortunately, she wants this fool. Yet another example of why celebrities should never be slapped, pun intended, with the title of role model.

Eat the cake Rihanna

Posted By on Mon, Mar 2, 2009 at 12:20 PM

It seems as if pop's reigning prince and princess are back together. After the beat down heard and seen 'round the world, Chris Brown and Rihanna have been spending time together at Diddy's place on Star Island. How noble? Yes, they are young and young people make mistakes, but this relationship is clearly toxic. Both of them are young and can easily move on with other people, which makes this union all the more troubling. Where are the parents in this equation? Clearly Diddy is not someone who should be advising young people about much of anything. Apparently Rihanna did not read my open-letter to her. Hopefully, she'll wake up and realize that not only does she deserve better, but she can do better. Let's pray that Chris Brown gets the help that he needs to prevent another incident like this from happening again.

The Great Black Hope

Posted By on Mon, Feb 16, 2009 at 2:43 PM

President Barack Obama is trying hard — real hard. The Republicans are standing in the way and on his neck as he tries to do something, anything to help turn this economy around. Part of me says, "Go Obama. Try to work with the Republicans to make a deal." The other part of me says "No Obama. Forget reaching across the aisle and trying to work with them." The GOP is standing in the way of progress as usual, which is why this thing is taking so long. The jury is still out on this working across the aisle stuff, but I will give him props for at least trying.
