South Memphis String Band Its an Americana supergroup, of sorts. Alvin Youngblood Hart, former Squirrel Nut Zipper Jimbo Mathus and North Mississippi Allstar/new Black Crowe Luther Dickinson have teamed up for a down-home, front-porch acoustic trio thats sure to jam the hell out of the evening. The band is planning its debut disc for later this year, but what Ive heard on MySpace is suprisingly mellow, yet traditional. One can only imagine what will happen with all that talent on one stage. Arizona What is it with Asheville and the state-name band monikers? First Nevada, now The Grand Canyon State? Anyway, these guys also split time in N.Y.C., and its music bears the stamp of both places: big widescreen jam rock and intimate Greenwich Village folkie tropes (they've toured with Band of Horses and Derek Trucks). It's quirky, but hooks are an endangered species as the songs careen between the two polarities without fully developing in either. Still, that was enough to earn them a spot in Southeast Performer's "Nine to Watch in '09," for what that's worth. With Rock Hillers Elonzo and Perry Fowler. Milestone (John Schacht)
Kings of Leon They may have sold out Madison Square Garden, but they're only trying to pack 'em into a smaller venue here the Bo-Round. No matter, surely people will start to catch on after a while. The Followill boys three brothers and a cousin may be getting some backlash for bringing on something a little more arena-rock-ish on its latest, but that doesn't mean the boys don't bring it. That latest effort, Only By the Night, is the band's fourth release and my pick for album of the year for 2008. Go see 'em. The Walkmen opens. Bojangles' Coliseum (Hahne)
