Bill Murray, Jan Vogler and Friends: New Worlds
Belk Theater
Oct. 2, 2018

I hope you didn't attend Tuesday night's performance by Bill Murray, Jan Vogler and Friends expecting a standup routine. As Murray himself pointed out, you might be shrugging your shoulders and wondering what's going on. Murray's performance had fantastic moments of wit but it was more of a window into the world of classical arts. He was out of view during intense classical performances performed by cellist Vogler, violinist Mira Wang and pianist Vanessa Perez. He provided direct readings of classic literature by Ernest Hemingway, Walt Whitman, Mark Twain and James Fenimore Cooper. Sure, there were moments of laughter, but how many people in the packed Belk Theater would have come out for a night filled with literature and classical music if not for Murray's involvement? Perhaps more of us should.
