OK, go see Robert Francis

When we first met Robert Francis, he was releasing his second album, Before Nightfall, his first major label release (Atlantic), and was hitting the road to support the album. Now, just a few short months later, he will make his first appearance in the Queen City in support of OK GO! (Visulite Theatre, tonight).

Since our last talk, Francis has been all over, mainly overseas. When I caught up with him a couple of weeks ago, he was in Paris, after just completing stops in Germany. “The tour is going great. Overseas is amazing. I’m really getting a ton of support over here” describes Francis, “every show is sold out! Packed!”

As far as stateside support for his new release – “It’s starting to come around back home. I’m primarily opening for other acts right now, but the idea is to soon headline and really give the audience my show.”

As far as the road goes, Francis describes the paradox of the tour. “I haven’t been home in over two months. I don’t remember what it was like to have a normal day. I get up early, shake off the hangover, do press all day, then a show at night, same thing the next. It’s great, but it is definitely busy.”

If you ask Robert if he actually misses home, you’ll get a mixed response. “I miss my dog, that’s for sure. And I do miss my own bed sometimes, but at the same time, if I was home, I’d want to be back on the road. I don’t know what else I would do really, so the road isn’t too bad.”

The one thing that Francis does have to prepare for when he hits the states is opening instead of headlining. On this portion of the tour he’ll be opening for indie alt-rockers OK GO!, who have made a name for themselves over the past few years with quirky YouTube videos and a unique sound.

“When you open, it’s really important that you learn how to build a set” Francis explains. “You can’t give the full performance you give when headlining so you have to work to get the essence of yourself to the fans faster, and in many cases to another band’s fan base. So, you really have to tinker with your set and make it as good as possible when you only have 30 minutes or so to perform.”

“I am thrilled to come to Charlotte, as I have never been. So it should be a good time” states Francis.

And as long as Robert brings his unique blend of song and sound, it should be just that.
