Big weekend for college football's elite

Posted By on Thu, Nov 7, 2013 at 4:00 PM

Why do I love college football? Because every week and every win means something. If your favorite team is at the top, it's got to win every week to keep its spot or hope to move up in the rankings. If your team is at the bottom, you're watching for other teams to lose in order to help your position.

This is a big week for just about everybody.

If you're a Florida State or Ohio State fan, you're praying for an Alabama and/or Oregon loss this weekend. There's a good chance for an upset and you'll need one if the Seminoles or Buckeyes are going to have a chance to get into the BCS Championship game. Not everything is riding on this week's games, but there are tough battles going on that could determine who's playing for the fancy crystal football.

Things get interesting starting tonight.

* Baylor (7-0) is taking on Oklahoma (7-1) at home. The Bears haven't really played anyone - yet - but they've got a gauntlet of five strong teams left to go, starting tonight with the Sooners. Even if Baylor can hold on tonight, I don't think they'll get past Texas Tech, Oklahoma State, TCU and Texas unscathed. Sorry Cinderella, it's not your year.

* Oregon (8-0) is traveling to Stanford (7-1) hoping to avenge last year's loss to the Cardinal. It should happen. Oregon is simply too fast and powerful on offense to see Stanford get the win again. Especially since Andrew Luck is playing for the Colts these days.

* Florida State (8-0) should have no problem with Wake Forest (4-5).

* LSU (7-2) might have two losses, but the game with top-ranked Alabama (8-0) could... get... interesting. I think the first half is gonna be a shootout. LSU has enough weapons on offense to score. During the second half, however, the Crimson Tide will settle down on defense and get enough stops to pull away by 10.

* Fresno State (8-0) wants more respect and a higher ranking, but they're not going to get it by playing Wyoming (4-4) this week.

Teams on the outside looking up at the hopes for a national title bid have to wonder how far the loser of Oregon-Stanford will fall. After this weekend, it's going to get pretty quiet until rivalry weekend and the looming conference championships. There might be a handful of undefeated teams now, but it's not going to stay that way for long.
