Jessica Holter is known as a Punnany Poet. You've seen her on HBO's Real Sex and in Charlotte at the Charlotte Literary Festival in 2007.
Now Holter is back with her first fictional novel, which takes a look at gender roles and sexuality like no other book has done. In The Punany Experience, Holter tackles sexual identity, pleasure and STDs without preaching or getting political; however, if you don't find a message in the pages of this fiction, then you've missed the biggest part of the experience.
Here's a brief look at what the book is about:
Take an unhappy husband with a spoiled and suspicious wife, an androgynous businesswoman with a knack for inflicting pain, an executive assistant with no shame, then add a passive-aggressive lesbian pillow princess to the scene and you have just started The War Between Tops and Bottoms.
Holter spoke with Creative Loafing about the book, which was released on July 6.

Here are the five best events to get you hot and bothered with or without a date going down in Charlotte and the surrounding area today, July 12, 2010 as selected by the folks at Creative Loafing. All You Can Bowl at Strike City Monday Night Pint Night at Dandelion Market SIN at Club Onyx Find Your Muse at The Evening Muse College Night at The Gold Club The sex scandal that has become the Catholic Church has hit Charlotte. A one time priest is accused of sexual misconduct with a 14-year-old boy dating back to 1977. That's 33 years ago. Talk about justice delayed. Here's what The Charlotte Observer reported about it: In Charlotte, according to a list on the diocese's website, Kelleher served at St. Patrick Cathedral from September 1966 until April 1968, and at Our Lady of the Assumption from August 1977 to July 1986. Albemarle Police Chief Gerald Michael told the Observer that his office talked with Kelleher on Wednesday and that Kelleher agreed to come to the Albemarle police department today. He will be charged with one count of taking indecent liberties with a child, police said. Michael said the incident is alleged to have occurred in 1977 on the grounds of Our Lady of the Annunciation Catholic Church in Albemarle. Kelleher was assigned there from April 1973 to August 1977. Up the East Coast, in Connecticut, there is another priestly sex scandal. Only this one didn't take 33 years to be uncovered. He used it to pay for fancy restaurants, clothing, vacations, hotels, a New York City apartment and a male companion's tuition at Harvard University, according to an affidavit obtained by CNN affiliate WTIC and filed with the Connecticut Superior Court. The affidavit says that between June 2003 and March 2010, Gray spent about $205,000 at high-end restaurants, $132,000 in hotel stays and $85,000 at clothing stores. While in New York City, he frequented the Waldorf Astoria, Omni Berkshire, and the W Hotel Times Square, among other posh hotels, the affidavit states. He also allegedly shopped at high-end retailers including Barneys, Armani and Saks Fifth Avenue. Along with expensive taste, Gray allegedly kept company with a number of male escorts, and allowed some to have credit cards in their name on his account. One escort, Islagar Labrada, allegedly charged more than $49,000 to the account. So, why is it that a priest who allegedly stole money to pay for sex got caught and dealt with swiftly, but a priest who allegedly molested a little boy had 33 years of freedom to move from school to school, parish to parish? It comes down to money. I've learned a long time ago that churches are less about saving souls and teaching the word of God and more about raising money and making you feel guilty for thinking about or having sex. Just think about this: If it cost money to molest boys in the flock, this would've been brought to an end a long time ago. Older men should know better. But if you think about the age of men who should be taking Viagra, they remember a time when you could have raw sex and only worry about pregnancy. They was around when the first Woodstock happened, and you could hook up with the bra-less girl in the mud and probably just walk away with a case of crabs. These days, things have changed. And you can't really teach an old dog with a hard-on new tricks. The results, from an analysis of the health insurance claims of men aged 40 and older, may have more to do with the nature of the men using the impotence drugs than with the medicines leading them to have riskier sex, the research report said. The study, looking at men taking Pfizers Inc. Viagra and Eli Lilly & Co.s Cialis, was published today in the Annals of Internal Medicine. The higher rate of infections was seen in the year before and after the men started taking the prescription medicines, according to the analysis. That suggests that users of drugs to treat erectile dysfunction, which also include Bayer AGs Levitra, may be more likely to engage in unsafe sex than nonusers, lead study author Anupam Jena said. What the study doesn't point out is who these older men are having sex with. Old women? "Sugar babies"? Who? The authors werent able to determine how many of the men were married and how many were heterosexual or other information on sexual behavior. In the year before taking the pills, users of ED drugs had an overall STD rate of 214 per 100,000 people, the study found. That gave them a 2.8 times greater risk of developing a sexually spread infection than men who didnt take the drugs. That decreased slightly in the year after, when pill-takers had a 2.65 times higher risk than non-takers, the study showed. The risk of getting HIV in the year before taking the pills was 3.32 times higher in drug-takers and 3.19 times greater in the year after, compared with those not taking the pills, they said. Users of the medicines also had higher rates of chlamydia. And, the age group with the highest number of new HIV/AIDS cases? People aged 40 to 49 accounted for the largest proportion of newly diagnosed HIV/AIDS cases, 27 percent, in 2007, according to the CDC. Those 50 to 59 accounted for 13 percent, while those over the age of 60 accounted for 4 percent. Maybe it's time to educate older people on what sex is like in the 21st century when doctors hand them the little blue pill. Instead, she turned herself into an advocate for young women and girls, the group with the highest number of new HIV/AIDS diagnoses. Now, Roseborough's community activism through her Rasberrirose Foundation is being honored by Steve Harvey's Hoodie Awards. She's a finalist as The Best Community Leader. "The Rasberrirose Foundation has a major focus on HIV and AIDS prevention," she said. "I work with young women between the ages of 10 and 18, teaching them self love and self respect and love for themselves especially when dealing with relationships." As a Finalist winner, Roseborough will fly out to Las Vegas for the 2010 Hoodie Awards, which will be held at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, on August 28. But to win, she's going to need your votes. A picture and brief description of the nominees will go on line this month on www.steveharvey.com and www.v1019.com. Best Community Leader category wins a new Ford Fusion.

The Rev. Joseph Kelleher, 82, has also been placed on administrative leave by the Diocese of Charlotte, pending further investigation. The Ireland-born priest retired in 1999, but since then has served as chaplain at Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School in Kernersville, said diocese spokesman David Hains.
Father Kevin Gray, 64, a former pastor at Sacred Heart Church in Waterbury, allegedly embezzled money from the church over the course of seven years.
