Mother of six Juquina Harris killed in Silver Fox parking lot

Posted By on Thu, Nov 18, 2010 at 4:29 PM

A 27-year-old mother of six, Juquina Harris, was killed outside of the Silver Fox Club on Statesville Avenue.

According to a release from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department:

Officers responded to a call for service which came in as a shooting in the parking lot of club Silver Fox.   When officers arrived on scene, they found a female lying on the ground outside the club suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.  The victim was pronounced deceased on scene by Medic at 2:13 a.m.  Initial statements from witnesses in the parking lot area are that several subjects were involved in a physical altercation in the parking lot near the entrance to the club.  Shortly after the fight began, one of these subjects pulled a handgun and multiple shots were fired in the parking lot.

Sadly, Harris's death won't be met with sympathy and compassion. People will ignore the fact that she was a mother, a sister and a daughter and focus on the fact that she was at a strip club when she was killed ... as if that makes the shooting less horrific.

***UPDATE***

Police have arrested two men and charged them in connection with Harris's shooting.

Elijah Akeem Ashford, , was arrested by the Violent Criminal Apprehension Team shortly after being notified that a murder warrant had been signed against him.  Elijah Ashford was arrested without incident at the intersection of Tappan Place and Academy Street.   The Violent Criminal Apprehension Team arrested Aaron Ashford without incident, at 6602 Wisteria Drive, shortly after 3:30 p.m., on Friday.  VCAT worked quickly to take both brothers into custody.  From the time that VCAT began working the cases until the arrests of both brothers were made, less than a day had passed.  Along with the tireless efforts of Homicide Unit Detectives, this case was brought to a quick resolution.

At this stage of the investigation, it is believed that the two subjects who arrived at CMC were bystanders and that one of the subjects was struck by gunfire.

Skype used to marry a same-sex couple ... Awwwww

Posted By on Wed, Nov 17, 2010 at 10:35 AM

GayCake

I have a soft spot in my heart for people who want to get married but can't. So when I saw that a same-sex couple beat the system with Skype so that they could share their love with the world, I couldn't help but smile.

Mark Reed, a board member for national LGBT group GetEqual married Dante Walkup, his partner of 10 years, without even leaving their home city of Dallas, a Time article has said. The wedding was officiated via Skype by a person in Washington D.C., where same-sex marriage is recognized, in what is called an "e-marriage." It's similar to the type of proxy ceremony that would take place if one spouse cannot be present, if they are for example, deployed with the military.

Although the actual wedding took place in their home city, the couple did have to travel to D.C. before the ceremony in order to obtain a marriage license.

At some point, we're going to have to get over stopping two people from getting married. With the GOP taking over the N.C. General Assembly, there is already talk of a constitutional  amendment that would totally outlaw same-sex marriage. But the short-sighted politicians better think twice.

There are no existing laws against "e-marriages." Along with legislators in states that recognize same-sex relationships, Reed is working to have the statutes passed that recognize the practice.

Let's hope it passes.

A sexy cartoon launch by Lena Hopkins-Jackson

The Urban Carrie Bradshaw is local artist Lena Hopkins-Jackson's alter ego — sort of.

And even though the cartoon is sexy, she was born out of political disgust. Jackson said in 2008 she wasn't happy with the way some political cartoonists were treating then-Sen. Barack Obama. She published posts on her blog about the character as a way to talk about the president in her way.

But, Jackson said, after the election she stopped blogging as much; however, she didn't want to let the character die.

"I haven't been blogging like I used to. What's going on now is a departure from politics and moving toward pop culture, and I wanted to do an animated cartoon to get people's attention and attract them to the blog," she said. "I partnered with Urban Tymes Magazine and the plan is every month to do a column about things that are going on in the city."

To launch The Urban Carrie Bradshaw into the public's mind, Hopkins-Jackson is hosting a party this Friday night that will include a showing of the animated short starring the chocolate city girl; some sexy poetry from a Punany Poet; Aalanie Renee; Charlotte's voice of the Quiet Storm, Preston Miles, who also does the voice of the boyfriend in the cartoon; and more at the Shhh Sensual Poetry and Jazz show. The event, which is Friday starting at 9 p.m., will be held at Allure, 1508 S. Mint St.

"The way to go with this was to make it a grown-and-sexy event," Jackson said. "There will be chocolate strawberry tasting, people are going to come dressed in sexy attire and all of that kind of stuff. It's the kind of event that [The Urban Carrie Bradshaw] would go to if she were a real person."

Have you heard about the Blue Waffle?

Posted By on Wed, Nov 10, 2010 at 12:09 PM

Of all the sick and twisted things that people make up about the vagina, this has to be up there with the grossest.

It's called The Blue Waffle Disease.

So, here we go:

- itching and the vagina inflammation

- vaginal discharge different than usual. It is different in color, smell and quantity.

- The vaginal area may have partial color changes. Some spots may be lighter, like a discoloration.

- Blue or purple colored vaginal area Now, all the mentioned above looks pretty similar to “vaginitis”, which may occur for different reasons, and the main would be lowered immunity and/or mechanical damages inside the vagina, that came from the lack of lubrication or use of unsuitable objects while masturbating. Keep in mind that vaginitis goes away by itself, spontaneously, just like it came, in the first place.

Have you ever seen blue or purple secretions from your vagina? What are you — a Smurf? If you've seen the pictures, which are too gross for me to post here (feel free to Google it), then you probably want to go and take a shower. But this is a fake disorder.

'Blue Waffle Disease' is a vaginal infection of mythic proportions. Images of this fictional disease started appearing on the internet on March 18, 2010. The gross and graphic nature of the images distracted readers from the actual symptoms of vaginitis, a malady unique to women.

Vaginitis manifests itself through itching and inflammation of the vagina. The normal vaginal discharge becomes clumpy and may have a strong smell. Bacteria grow normally in every woman's vagina, helping to maintain vaginal health by normalizing an acid pH and keeping potentially bad bacteria from multiplying. In the case of vaginitis there is an abnormal discharge, itching that may be mild or severe, and a burning feeling in the vulva.

Vaginitis may be caused by lowered resistance to disease due to stress or poor diet. The use of underwear that does not 'breathe' and the use of 'feminine hygiene sprays' can also cause vaginitis. Usually the condition goes away of its own accord. A visit to the doctor may be necessary in chronic cases.

Other causes (according to Our Bodies Ourselves) are "taking birth control pills, other hormones, or antibiotics; diabetes or a pre-diabetic condition; cuts, abrasions, and other irritations in the vagina (from childbirth, intercourse without enough lubrication, tampons, or using an instrument in the vagina medically or for masturbation). [Women] can also get infections during sex with a partner who has [infections]. Chronic vaginal infections may be a sign of serious medical problems such as HIV infection and diabetes."

In conclusion, if someone tells you to Google "Blue Waffle" be prepared to get grossed out.
