Five ways to boost your sex drive without a pill

Posted By on Mon, Dec 13, 2010 at 4:28 PM

00000503_wife_in_red_lingerie

It's not often that I look to a blog about moms for sex tips or advice, but this post from The Stir, caught my eye and attention.

Sometimes, sex boosters come from the most unexpected places and according to this article, most of the time these boosts don't need batteries, a little blue pill or a cream.

1. Tell your guy to pump gas

No, this has nothing to do with the fact that men acting helpful around the house makes us happy and, therefore, randy. It's a little stranger than that. A new British survey found that women get hot when their guys smell of paint, gasoline, leather, or—get this—a printer ink cartridge?! Apparently these are the scents that "transport" many women back to a happy, romantic memory. Hey, whatever works! For the man in your life, you should try to smell like lipstick, baby lotion, or a roast beef dinner. Maybe now someone will invent a perfume that works like Willy Wonka's Three-Course Gum ...

Sally's take: There's nothing hotter than seeing your mate stick something long and curved in a hole. I totally agree with this one.

2. Clean up the house

A study from last fall found that for husbands and wives alike, the more housework you do, the more often you are likely to have sex with your spouse. Mopping isn't exactly the key to getting hot-and-bothered. It's more about being a go-getter. Researchers found that if you throw yourself into your housework, you're also likely to throw yourself into having sexy sex. There's also something to be said for working together as a team. So get that vacuum out while he does the dishes, and later you can give each other a "high-five."

Sally's take: Getting down on the floor and hand washing it in a white T-shirt while making slow, soapy circles and getting hit from the back is so delicious.

3. Have a gingerbread latte

Ginger increases blood circulation to act as a natural Viagra for him. It's a trick that's been around for centuries ... Madame du Barry regularly served ginger to her lovers, including Louis XV, to drive them mad.

Sally's take: This one only works if you can get your mate to shut up about the price of the holiday drinks at Starbucks.

4. Use a super-charged lube

For a more direct effect, you could try a sex drive-boosting lube, like Zestra Feminine Arousal Fluid (which uses a botanical blend of angelica extract, evening primrose oil, and other botanical ingredients to increase clitoral and vaginal sensation) or KY Intense Arousal Gel for Her (which employs niacin to boost blood flow to the area and heighten sensitivity). Many women swear by both.

Sally's take: Yep. They work like a charm, and if you don't spend the next day totally worn out and satisfied, then you did something wrong.

5. Wear red

Research from the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology found that men get turned on by ladies in red. And apparently, we get turned on when they wear it, too! So for your next holiday party, go for a LRD (Little Red Dress), and suggest he wear a crimson tie to match. It's a win-win, and you'll look festive to boot!

Sally's take: This so works. So much so, that you may not make it to your party.

Things that won't work: Ugandan male sex strike

Posted By on Thu, Dec 2, 2010 at 3:54 PM

I don't mean to be stereotypical, but asking men not to have sex in order to make a political statement will work about as well as teaching abstinence in sex ed and expecting teenagers not to try sex anyway.

Still, that hasn't stopped a Ugandan politician from trying.

A Ugandan opposition politician on Thursday urged his male supporters to go on sex strike until their wives promise not to vote for the ruling party in upcoming national elections. Most analysts believe the February poll will return long-running President Yoweri Museveni and his National Resistance Movement (NRM) party to power.

"You say you are opposition supporters but your wives are still voting for the NRM," Stanley Kalembaye told a group of men at a town hall meeting, part of which was screened on the East African country's NTV television channel.

"I suggest you tell them you will deny them conjugal rights until they change parties."

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) candidate, who is running for mayor in the southwestern Mbarara town, said the men should explain to their wives that NRM rule had led to unemployment and lack of growth.

Sex and sexuality has been used to make political statements all over the world. PETA gets naked because that's the only way they're going to get any real attention. But asking a man to stop having sex? That's not going to work.

"They should try to explain the situation to their wives who may not hear about it when they are home with the children," Kalembaye told Reuters.

"But if they are frustrated their wives don't understand, they may deny sex."

Sex strikes have been used as political weapons in African countries before -- but they are more usually organized by women against men.

Thousands of Kenyan women claimed to deny their husbands sex last year in a bid to end post election strife and a group of Liberian women did the same in a campaign that many say played a role in ending that country's lengthy civil war.

What Kalembaye should realize is that when wives start withholding sex, change happens.

World AIDS Day: We're still not getting tested enough

Posted By on Wed, Dec 1, 2010 at 2:12 PM

Dec. 1 is usually the day we start thinking about buying more Christmas gifts. But the red ribbons you're seeing today don't have anything to do with the holiday of giving. It's World AIDS Day. If you haven't been tested in 2010, other than feeling ashamed of yourself for not knowing your status, you should have no problem getting a test today.

Though there is more awareness about HIV and AIDS, people still aren't getting tested.

Guidelines making AIDS tests part of routine care have helped get more Americans tested, but more than half of adults still have no idea if they are infected, government researchers reported on Tuesday.

Nearly 83 million Americans have been tested for the AIDS virus, 11.4 million of them since the guidelines were issued in 2006, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

But 200,000 Americans are infected with the virus and do not know it, CDC director Dr. Thomas Frieden said.

"The numbers show that progress is possible," Frieden told a news conference.

"They also show that progress is needed," he added. "To see a steady improvement in just a two or three year period, I think, is quite encouraging. It's progress but it's not success."

The CDC estimates that 1.1 million Americans are infected with the human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS.

Testing for HIV has evolved; these days, you can get a rapid test — which will give your results before you even get out of the chair. There is a hint of fear every time you go and take an HIV Test. But this disease is preventable, and you owe it to yourself to know your status.

Here's where you can go locally:

In Mecklenburg County, there are eight free clinics where you can go and get tested, such as the Charlotte Community Health Clinic (3040 A Eastway Drive, 704-316-6561), the Matthews Free Medical Clinic (113 N. Ames St., Matthews, 704-841-8882) and the Charlotte Volunteers in Medicine Free Clinic (1315 Beatties Ford Road, 704-350-1300), among others.

The medical community isn't the only group trying to raise AIDS Awareness and encourage HIV testing. Carolinas Care Partnership (www.carolinascare.org) will offer free HIV and syphilis testing on World AIDS Day, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at 7510 E. Independence Blvd., Ste. 105.
