Sixteen months ago, a South Carolina man was convicted of raping a horse. And no, I'm not making this up.
Rodell Vereen, 51, must serve two years probation and register as a sex offender, according to the state Department of Probation, Parole and Pardon Services. Vereen was released March 1 and will be supervised until Feb. 28, 2013.Vereen pleaded guilty in November 2009 to buggery and trespassing after he was charged in July 2009, when the woman found him in her barn at Lazy B Stables in the Wampee community of Horry County, police said. The woman pointed a shotgun at him until police arrived.
He was already a registered sex offender because this wasn't the first time he'd mounted the horse.
n July 2008, Vereen, who owns a landscaping business, pleaded guilty to the same charge after he was caught Thanksgiving Day of 2007 having sex with the same horse. The woman told police she caught Vereen having sex with a 21-year-old female horse named Sugar. She told officers she had video of Vereen "having relations" with one of her horses on July 19, 2009, according to a police report.Vereen also had prior convictions of burglary from 1991 and 1995. Vereen has been registered as a sex offender since pleading to the first buggery charge in 2008, according to the State Law Enforcement Division.

Are you ready for some bikes, babes and burlesque?
Then you want to be at Tremont Music Hall's Trash-O-Rama this Friday, if for no other reason than to see Greensboro's siren of burlesque, Tiger RoXXX sleek like a kitten with costumes and performances that purr growl and amp up the sexy.
Trash-O-Rama is a grindhouse style of entertainment with live music, a car show and of course the babes.
Creative Loafing: What can Charlotte fans expect from your troupe?
Tiger RoXXX: Burlesque is the art of tease, and we're on the more traditional end of that. They can come out and see a good and alluring show. We have a lot of different characters. We have girls who stick to the traditional end. We have a lot of fun-loving girls and we get out there and have a good time. We also have a comedic side and that's lots of fun.
Who is your most popular character?
We have a girl named Just Jingles. She's one of the younger girls, and she puts her heart and soul into it and is a lot of fun. She really grasps the idea of what burlesque is about, you know, women's empowerment and about finding yourself and just speaking your story through your body and through the music. She raises up that energy and pulls the crowd into the act.
How long have you been doing burlesque?
I've bee doing burlesque for about five years now.
What have you seen in the five years since you've been doing it?
I think that people are understanding that it is an art form and we take the theater, comedy, sideshow and put it all together, along with dance, movement and storytelling. We put that all in a three- to seven-minute number. Before people just thought it was just 'shaking your thing.'
That said, what are some misconceptions that people have about burlesque?
I think that people have the misconception that we're going to get naked or do something lewd. We're not trying to go out there and drop our pants and our top in the first 10 seconds of our number, because that's not what it's about. It's about playing with the mind and playing with our attitude. Then showing that we're proud of our bodies and telling a story. It's like reading a book you don't put the good stuff in the first chapter because then you don't want to read on.

This week, two alleged sex offenders were discovered getting close to kids in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. One was a teacher. The other was a thief with a key to a local school.
According to The Charlotte Observer, James Edward Meskill, 38, who worked at J.H. Gunn Elementary School and lives in Cabarrus County, was charged Wednesday with sexual exploitation of a minor and a first-degree sex offense.
CMS Police Chief Bud Cesena said Meskill, who resigned immediately, was hired in February and cleared the CMS background check."There was nothing that would have given us any indication," Cesena said. He said there is no sign that he did anything inappropriate with students, though the investigation by Cabarrus County authorities continues.
Cesena said Meskill lent his camcorder to a Gunn teacher who is working on national board certification, which requires teachers to videotape lessons. The teacher contacted CMS police when she saw the sexual material.
Cesena said the camcorder held video of Meskill attempting intercourse with the young child.
"This is just one of the most disgusting things I've ever seen in my entire police career," said Cesena, a former officer with Charlotte-Mecklenburg police.
School officials said there is no evidence that Meskill, who had been a CMS employee for two months, had inappropriate contact with students. He resigned after his arrest.
In an unrelated incident at Northwest School of The Arts, a sex offender is accused of stealing instruments (the musical kind) from the school.
WCNC reported that Samuel Gilchrist, 43, and a registered sex offender, had a master key to the school and have been stealing instruments since January.
Of the 11 instruments, 10 were owned by the children themselves, said Officer Caleb Komis. He said that Gilchrist had a master key to the school on his key chain when he was arrested, but they dont know how he got that key. Were working with CMS on that, Komis said.
Police dont believe any children were present when Gilchrist was allegedly in the school. But that doesnt make parents feel any better.
My thing is, he could have hid anywhere in the school, said parent Tanisha Fant.
Ashanti Pierce, who was using a tenor saxophone that was stolen, said students had feared this was an "inside job" but didn't expect this.
"To hear that somebody had a key to the school, it's kind of baffling," she said. "It makes me angry really to see that. I mean, they are stealing from kids, who basically--this is our life at the moment--so why take instruments from high school students?"
In this case as well, CMS reports that no children were harmed. Still, it send chills down your spine to know sex offenders have such easy access to children.

Some things, you just can't make up. This is one of them. A Mississippi man was arrested and being held on a $60,000 bond for wait for it ... wait for it having sex with pigs.
Eww!
Andrew Lee Nash, 52, was arrested on the spot. I know even the police had to get physically ill watching the video to get the evidence it took to lock him up. Greenwood Police Chief Henry Purnell said the hogs were examined by a local veterinarian and he found that four of the hogs had a vaginal infection.
How nasty are you if you're giving a pig an STD?
If Nash is indicted and found guilty, he faces up to 120 years in jail.
Here's where I have a serious problem: When a man is convicted of raping a woman, he usually doesn't face this kind of time. That makes this story just that much weirder.
