Coming Soon: Black Bear Saloon

Posted By on Thu, Apr 8, 2010 at 10:46 AM

The N.C. Music Factory is manufacturing yet another bar - Black Bear Saloon - and production on it ends soon.

SAM_1113

Their grand opening party is Friday, April 16, and will feature a live band — The Swinging Richards — and DJ Kommotion, according to Director of Operations, Nicole Steeger.

Though I am excited about having another place to party, I am more excited about the fact Black Bear serves food - because the key to my heart, is through my fat ass. Black Bear serves lunch and dinner, and has a late night menu until 2 a.m. This will provide the offices in the N.C. Music Factory (such as Creative Loafing) a place to eat lunch and a place to munch after a night out at Butter, Fillmore, The Uptown Amphitheatre or Halo.

Black Bear will have trivia on Tuesdays and karaoke on Wednesdays — and they have 35 HDTVs that can get any sporting event you might want to watch. Perhaps even Underwater Hockey or the World Marbles Championship.

Also opening this summer: Wet Willies right next door to Black Bear.

Down the road, the Epicentre will welcome Vida Mexican Kitchen y Cantina. Finally, a place to get margaritas Uptown!

I lied ...

Posted By on Thu, Apr 1, 2010 at 7:17 PM

In my column currently out in print: The EpiCentre vs The NC Music Factory, I said that there is no boxing match or cockfight between the two nightlife entities.

Yet, when I went to the EpiCentre last night to check out the new Mortimer’s Café and Pub and shop around for some nightlife, I was approached by some EpiCentre employees who reamed me about said article arguing that the EpiCentre is much, much better. For starters, it was not only busy and bumping, but actually open on a Wednesday night. Touché. They even went so far as to claim that all the bars within the radius of 4th to 7th Street between Church and College count as the EpiCentre when going up against the NC Music Factory.

ufc main

Fitting that I went to a UFC fight later. As I was watching two grown men beat the shit out of each other, I couldn’t help but picture EpiCentre and NC Music Factory bouncers in there fighting one another … but perhaps we can opt for a bartender’s battle.

As a girl the best thing about going to a UFC fight is not having to stand in line for the bathroom – especially when you start your period in the middle of the fight. Note to Bojangles arena – can you put some tampon dispensers in the ladie’s bathrooms please. There’s nothing like a having wad of toilet paper shoved up your vagina to ruin a good time.

Anyway, I'm sorry I lied to you ... here are pictures of Mortimers and more fight pics.

If you want free VIP passes to a Bobcats game then keep reading...

Posted By on Wed, Mar 31, 2010 at 2:50 PM

The voting has commenced for the Lady Cats in the NBA dance team bracket. Translation: VOTE NOW!

To thank you for voting I’ll give you a pair of passes to join me in the Front Court Lounge for this Friday’s game against the Bucks and next Saturday’s game against the Pistons.

SAM_1035

The kicker is you have to sit there for 60 seconds and register on the NBA site - I know it’s a lot to ask for that much of your attention span, but time is money and the face value on these tickets are a lot higher than a minute worth of work … just saying.

How to play: Send me an e-mail at brittney.cason@creativeloafing.com with your NBA screen name and copy and paste the “Thank You for Voting.”

First 30 e-mails to hit my inbox scores. If you win, I will respond with the game for which your tickets are for and how to retrieve them.

I try to write back everyone that e-mails me to thank them for reading & playing, but that’s a lot of e-mails and I have a date tonight, at the UFC fight. So, if I don’t write you back, know that I love you AND if the Lady Cats advance to the next round I’ll be giving away more tickets. SO VOTE… cause you’ll win too.

City Limits Saloon opens in University ... yee haw!

Posted By on Fri, Mar 26, 2010 at 2:37 PM

By Chandler Smith-Currie

If you are looking for good music, cold beer and a “boot stompin', shit kickin’, hell raising good time” ... then City Limits Saloon is where you should go. According to manager, Kevin Frazier, City Limits is not as traditional as Coyote Joe’s and not as upscale as Whiskey River. It is a nice alternative for country and non-country fans.

I went into City Limits expecting to see the same layout and decor of what was previously Buckwild; however, they completely renovated the ambiance. The place looked great with its red, white and blue country theme. And the painting of Johnny Cash flippin’ the bird on the wall behind the stage was a nice touch. It made even my hip-hop loving self was ready to throw on some cowboy boots and start line dancing.

Innovative drinking — The Polar Pitcher

Posted By on Mon, Mar 22, 2010 at 11:30 AM

I don't know if getting drunk makes people more creative or what, but drinking seems to keep getting more and more innovative. I don't know if I'm going to a bar or a science fair anymore ... Now, there's the Polar Pitcher... the coolest thing to happen to drinking since The Chuggler

polar pitcher

You'd probably expect to see thise type of innovative drinking tool at an EpiCentre bar, right? ... but no, I found this at AMF Lanes on South Boulevard. They also offer unlimited soda with a party package, which is pretty exciting.

Just call me Miss Tailgate

Posted By on Mon, Mar 15, 2010 at 3:51 PM

I may have hosted the Miss Lake Norman pageant, but don't get me wrong... I am by no means, a beauty queen.

As a baby, my face was essentially nothing but fat cheeks with dimples, which apparently was adorable by southwestern Virginia standards because everyone talked my mom into entering me in the county fair's baby beauty contest, and next thing I know I am little Miss Rockingham County… up until the point I started walking. My mom put me in a dress and took me back to the county fair, but rather than lining up on stage with the other prositots, I ran off and dove into the pig’s pen at the livestock exhibit near the stage and started splashing in the mud, in my dress. I obviously have no recollection of this, I was just told this story by everyone in my hometown. Apparently, I haven’t changed a bit …

NTL ad Bristol

Needless to say, I never entered a pageant again. But I was recently bequeathed a crown ... a crown that dons me the most prestigious of party titles, an honor for which I will hold in the highest regard ... I am the first ever Miss Tailgate for the National Tailgating League — hereby pronounced Queen of Tailgating. A role that I promise to fulfill with the grace and poise of a queen ... and a damn good cornhole player.

I will be traveling with the National Tailgating League to races and games to emcee the Cornhole Tournaments and host the party. You see, The NTL isn't just a Cornhole Tournament ... it's a freaking tailgate. They have the Budweiser Porta-Party, which at Bristol will be a sports bar in the middle of Earhart Campgrounds. But you should sign up for the tournament because you win money. And I don't know about you, but I like winning money. Sign up here

The show Fast Track to Fame, the new high-octane talent show on SPEED where performers

can zoom from ‘nobody’ to star in 60 minutes, will also be at Bristol. And much like I did for America's Got Talent ... I am helping them find talent. See how you can audition here ... and I'll see you in Bristol.

Ri Ra has re-opened

Posted By on Fri, Mar 12, 2010 at 12:18 PM

The roof, the roof ... the roof of Ri Ra was on fire. But now it's rebuilt, and Ri Ra has re-opened ... and with the luck of the Irish, just in time for St. Patrick's Day. Let me begin by saying that perhaps the fire was best thing that could've happened to Ri Ra Irish Pub — it gave them the opportunity to open as essentially a new bar with a whole new look ... and it looks better. For starters, they tore down the wall above the staircase to open, and lighten, up the top level.

SAM_0961

The chandeliers lacing the once burning roof give it more of a lounge ambiance than an Irish pub, but the menu selections — both food and drink — remind that it is one... Such as Guiness, Harp and Smithwicks on draft.

This Saturday, March 13, the pub will open at 9 a.m. with morning menu offerings such as the traditional Irish Breakfast, transitioning to an all-day menu at 11. Rí Rá will feature Irish dancers in-house throughout the day, as well as live Irish traditional music followed by performances by Dallas Reece and the U2 tribute band Beautiful Day.

I bet when all the people stop by during Rich and Bennett's famous St. Patty's Day pub crawl, the owners will relish and rejoice ... in the smoking ban.

My 'acting' debut with Rob Dyrdek

Posted By on Tue, Mar 9, 2010 at 5:49 PM

I don’t get society’s obsession with celebrities — do we worship them for being flawless, or fixate on their flaws to make ourselves feel flawless? And I have never been one to obsess over hot celebrity guys… I don’t see all the hype about Brad Pitt, and I realize Mr. Big is a fictional character. But after my friend Jackie introduced me to the MTV show Rob Dyrdek's Fantasy Factory, I found myself wanting to date, fall in love and have babies with professional skateboarder Rod Dyrdek.

That man is an exact replica of the portrait of the perfect man I have painted in my head. He's creative, adventurously athletic, quirky, positive thinking, fun and funny, street (and business) smart, altruistic, sexy skater boy, surrounded by cool people, dog loving… all of which I picked up on by watching one episode.

I had to be sure that he was not a fictional-reality-character, and that he is for real… so I suggested to Jackie that we watch the entire season on her DVR. I fell in love that night… not necessarily with Rob Dyrdek, but with the idea that the perfect man does in fact exist — if in Hollywood, then definitely in real life. Maybe I won’t have to settle for less than the full package after all. And with that, Rob and his power animals became my first celebrity crush since Joey from New Kids on the Block.

Fast forward a year...

Now that I have deemed an unattainable man as the unrequited love of my life, you can imagine my reaction when I walked into East in Hollywood to eat with Patrycja, the girl with whom I switched cities with for the show Holidate, and there sat Rob Dyrdek at the bar, having a drink with his manager on the show.
