Are You Ready For Football? 

Panthers season kicks off, college underway

Are you ready for some football? I am ... especially the tailgating associated with it. You see, last year I had to be at Panthers stadium up to seven hours before kick-off, but it wasn't to tailgate -- it was to TopCat. Therefore, this year marks my first real season of Carolina football.

So, let's all grab our red Solo cups and pour ourselves some spectator's Gatorade, because if the preseason is a forecast of our home team's season -- we're going to need it. Are the Panthers suffering from the curse of Janet Jackson's titty since her wardrobe malfunction during their Super Bowl run? Perhaps.

For the preseason games, I got to the stadium a mere two hours before kick-off and on my way to tailgate, I cheered on my girls on the TopCat walk with a chocolate chip "bakie" from SunCom in one hand, and a cooler of beer in the other. If you're looking for the ultimate tailgate then you'll find it at the self-titled Ultimate Tailgate party on 3rd and Graham.

Oh, and where did all the Steelers fans came from? They monopolized the stadium last week. There were more of them present at the start of the game than there were Panthers fans. They swung their terrible towels, and we played terribly. The further down the Panthers' score went, the higher the alcohol content of their non-fickle fans got. But at least the TopCats looked hot in their new white uniforms.

When it comes to spectating and tailgating, college football outranks the NFL.

Cason point: Appalachian State's upset of Michigan. But my team is my alma mater, Virginia Tech. Cue to the ECU vs. VT game in Blacksburg, which is where I spent my Labor Day weekend. Like many fellow Hokies, I made a poster for Game Day with "Thank You" surrounded by logos for every Virginia school, ECU, UNC, Penn State, Alabama, Ohio State, Minnesota, Tennessee and WVU.

Our scarce victory over ECU wasn't just a football game; it was the first opportunity Hokies had to unite since the tragic events of April 16. We all got to party together with "kegs and eggs" at the early morning tailgate, and then utilized ESPN's Game Day as a medium to thank other universities for rallying around us.

We cried together at the pregame ceremony and cheered on our defense and special teams that kept ECU from beating us. We used football as a method to triumph over tragedy. With all the emotion and expectations in the game, we didn't show our best performance. But I have no doubt that like the university, the football team will prevail. We are Virginia Tech after all.
