Bob Rucho is a drama queen

Plus, a note of congratulations

You know what's more annoying this time of year than long lines at the post office, driving in the rain near any big-box store and people who bring holiday desserts to the office when others are trying to lose weight? (Oh, wait — I'm usually the person who brings calorie-filled treats to work. Sorry, co-workers.) When politicians shout from the rooftops of social media that Obamacare is worse than the combined results of some of the most horrifying events in the past century.

On Dec. 15, state Sen. Bob Rucho (R) unabashedly tweeted, "Justice Robert's [sic] pen & Obamacare has [sic] done more damage to the USA then the swords of the Nazis, Soviets & terrorists combined."

Talk about a drama queen. During a time of year when the mainstream message calls for peace on earth, goodwill to men — walk into any retail store or office space and you're sure to hear these song lyrics on repeat — you have a douchebag like Rucho (who makes his living as a dentist and probably has no trouble affording health insurance) throwing out intensely offensive statements for attention, like a teenage girl posting pictures of herself online, barely dressed and practically begging for comments. We call that being thirsty.

On Monday, Rucho told a Charlotte Observer reporter: "What I stand on is the truth. The bottom line is I still believe fully that the negative impact on the finances of North Carolina and its people is going to be significantly impacted even in comparison to any of those wars that occurred. ... People need to open their eyes. This is a serious problem."

You know what's a serious problem? Diminishing the pain and suffering of victims worldwide to make a political point.

ON ANOTHER NOTE, congratulations go out to CL's copy editor, Emiene Wright, for sharing a story this year about another dentist who actually did some good for his community. She recently won the 2013 Print Features Award in the Charlotte Area Association of Black Journalists' inaugural News Excellence Awards, for a cover story she wrote about Reginald Hawkins, Charlotte's most outspoken civil rights leader.

FINALLY, from our cubicles to yours, we wish you the happiest of holidays.
