CD Review: Echo Code's One More Played Out Tragedy

The Deal: Now a trio, Charlotte's Echo Code independently releases new disc, One More Played Out Tragedy. The disc was produced by Patrick Boyd, who has worked with Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes and All-American Rejects.

The Good: Let's face it: There's nothing fancy going on here. It's straight-ahead rock with vocals reminiscent of Alice in Chains and plenty of distortion on the guitars. The music takes cues from bands like Black Sabbath and Godsmack. The band sets itself apart from a lot on the scene with three-part harmonies on many of the choruses on the 10-track CD. The quick-hitting guitar riff of "Trapped" also hints at more of a metal influence in the band's music, and they aren't afraid to slow it down for a ballad, as heard on "Granted."

The Bad: Not taking anything away from the Chains-esque harmonies which sound fantastic, but I only wonder if they are a bit overdone at times such as on "Smoke." There's a heavy influence from '90s music, which doesn't take away from its talent but can make the band sound a little dated.

The Verdict: A solid rock album which continues to show the diversity of the Charlotte music scene. There's a strange balance of the music sounding like it's coming from the '90s and the thought of "there was a lot of really good music in that decade." You can also say it's simply good rock music.
