THE DEAL: Foo Fighters recharges its rock roots.
THE GOOD: With the scream of "These are my famous last words," the Foos launch into the band's seventh studio album, one of its hardest to date. I'm not sure if it's the influence of time spent in Them Crooked Vultures, but there's hints of Queens of the Stone Age style singing here, without taking away from the sound Foo Fighters are known for. When you think that "These Days" is heading into ballad territory, it quickly hits a higher gear back into the rock range. From the energetic riff of first single "Rope" to the screaming megaphone style of "White Limo" — probably the heaviest Foo Fighters song to date — from the rhyming rhythm of "Arlandria" to the rough and tumble intro/chorus of "A Matter of Time," the album quickly grows on the listener and becomes comfortable as much as jaw-dropping. Wasting Light is going to make its way toward the top of the list of best Foo albums. Halfway through my first listen, I didn't want it to end.
THE BAD: Time in Foo Fighters takes away from Them Crooked Vultures and vice versa. I'm not sure which is worse.
THE VERDICT: Dave Grohl established himself as a fully competent front man years ago, and this album further concretes Foo Fighters on the rock music scene, one that was desperately in need of the kick in the balls that Wasting Light provides.
