CD Review: The Gutter Twins

Saturnalia

The Deal: Former singers of Afghan Whigs and Screaming Trees join forces for new group.

The Good: The CD opens with the gothic, bluesy "The Stations," letting you know both band members are out to create something different. Instead of sounding like an odd dichotomy, the vocals of Mark Lanegan and Greg Dulli complement each other nicely. The music isn't overly impressive, only setting the tone as the vocals are the main focus on a disc that's brooding and powerful. "Idle Hands" is a definite highlight – musically and vocally. The overall theme of the album remains dark – think Nine Inch Nails without the industrial setting.

The Bad: The vocal pairing works best when they aren't singing as a duet at the same time, instead working between each other. That's not to say their tones don't work well together, but they sound better on "The Stations" than on "The Body."

The Verdict: Their experience and talent shines through. One of the best albums of 2008, so far.

Sub Pop; Release date: March 4, 2008
