Comic Review: Green Hornet No. 1

Green Hornet No. 1

Published by Dynamite Entertainment. Written by Kevin Smith. Breakdowns by Phil Hester. Pencils by Jonathan Lau.

The Deal: Movie director and part-time comic book scribe Kevin Smith rolls out his brand-new version of the Green Hornet. This comic series is based on a screenplay written by Smith some time ago.

The Good: Honestly, I've been a fan of the Green Hornet since watching him make a guest appearance on that classic Batman TV show years ago. (I still don't see how Robin was able to hang with Kato -- as played by Bruce Lee.) But I absolutely hated the generic/cornball Hornet comic published by Now Comics back in the day. I'm happy to say that the first issue of this new series is a decent read -- but it's not mind-blowing. Smith's story -- minus some of his sometimes extreme amounts of dialogue -- is energetic and it's got some great cinematic pacing. And the art, by Jonathan Lau, is kinetic and pretty enough. All that being the case, nothing stands out as excellent with this issue.

The Bad: The opening sequence seemed a trifle clumsy and, in parts, pretty (for an adventure comic) unrealistic.

The Verdict: If you're a fan of the Green Hornet (like me), it's nice to see the character back in action. If you're looking for a groundbreaking comic book experience, this ain't it. At the very least, it's much, much better than that GH series Now Comics used to publish.
