Family Ties

Welcome to your friendly neighborhood eatery

GRAND OPENING: June 2, 2005.

OWNER: Jai Clemmons, with her son RC Clemmons as General Manager. The name "Jaimama" derived from the family-like atmosphere among the staff, as well as the atmosphere they hope to create in the neighborhood. Many of the members of the staff put their own blood, sweat and tears into the remodeling of the building, and all seem to have a sense of loyalty to the restaurant and to the Clemmons.

AMBIENCE: After undergoing a facelift, Jaimama is fitting right into the Dilworth neighborhood. "I knew when we got the building that it needed a complete transformation," stated RC. "We wanted to create an environment that was very neighborhood friendly." Jaimama produced a patio to accommodate 40 people and an internal setup that offers a few different ideas. Guests are greeted by a small bar when entering the restaurant, perfect for a martini after work or a casual dinner. During lunch, large glass windows give the restaurant a bright open feel, but at night, they provide a different perspective. Rich reds and oranges blended on the walls are set off by the fresh plants and dimly lit candles

SEATING: Set up in one large dining area, the restaurant (including the patio) seats about 124.

TYPE OF CUISINE: "Coastal inspired cuisine," which includes Cajun, Charleston and the Caribbean. After singing on a cruise ship for a considerable amount of time, RC has seen much of the world. Some of his strongest influences came from his time spent in the Caribbean — hence the Caribbean twist in the cuisine. Originally from North Carolina, Jai's Southern ties bring the Charleston edge to the menu. Combined with the Cajun, the menu offers a decadent array of flavors.

PRICE LIST: Lunch entrees range from Shrimp and Grits ($8) to Grilled Swordfish with Caper Salsa ($9). Sandwiches run from the traditional New Orleans Shrimp Po' Boy ($6) to the beloved Southern Pulled Pork sandwich ($6). Dinner menu includes appetizers such as Bayou Crawfish and Fried Green Tomatoes ($9), Georgia Rock Shrimp Dip ($6) and a Shellfish Cobb ($10). Entrees range from Jamaican Ribs ($18) to Chipotle Barbecued Halibut ($21) to Trinidad Marinated Lobster Tail ($24).

WINE LIST: Twenty-six offered by the glass, 19 by the bottle. The wine list is broken down into flavors that would complement specific dishes. For instance, "Crisp Whites — Fresh and racy whites that best highlight salads and seafood; great patio wines." Clemmons describes the list as "one where there's something for everyone. We wanted it to be very approachable."

ADDED BONUSES: Think Martinis. Jaimama has a number of original specialty Martinis — including the "Mamatini" — offered two for $10 every day. Thursday nights, all Martinis are two for $10.

HOURS: Open for lunch 11am until 2pm Monday through Friday, dinner 5pm until 10pm. Dinner Friday and Saturday 5pm until 11pm. Closed Sundays.

RESERVATIONS: Reservations accepted only for parties of eight or more.

RECOMMMENDED PARKING: Jaimama has a private lot for parking. If not parking in the lot, keep in mind that in Dilworth, signs that say they will tow you really mean it.

CREDIT CARDS: All major credit cards accepted.

WHEELCHAIR ACCESS: Wheelchair accessible.
