Enraptured

I can appreciate John Sugg's viewpoint and only hope he reads this entirely as I did his article ("Rapture Politics," April 20). First off, I think his style of writing is excellent. He has great wit and he is exceptional at playing on words. All that being said, my favorite quote is "the surest obstacle to the truth is assuming you already have it."

The word rapture is used in the Bible. The problem is we lose in translation. We as Americans are under the premise that we were the first ones here and our language is original. In the reference scripture from I Thessalonians 4:17, the phrase "caught up" comes from the Greek word harpazo. This word, in its original form, means "to snatch away or carried away forcibly." Where the term "rapture" comes from is the Latin Vulgate, the translation of the scriptures from Hebrew into Latin. The word for "caught up" in the same referenced scripture is rapturo.

So, the term is in the Bible. It's just not in the English version. However, keep in mind that the God I serve though Jesus Christ has seen fit to originate his Word through the Hebrew and Greek languages, so the English will sometimes be a little off, but the ideas and assumptions should be looked at as the same.

Remember this if you don't remember anything else about this email. Jesus Christ died in yours and my place so that we wouldn't have to suffer damnation for a rebellion that we didn't start. However, we constantly fuel this rebellion. If you don't know him, I encourage you to study and find out about the real God, Jesus Christ.

Positive Voice For Music Scene

I'd like to respond to Brian McKinney's common misconceptions about the Charlotte music scene ("Charlotte A Musical Dead Space," Letters, April 20).

No, it's not easy being indie, here or anywhere else in the country. However, what Mr. McKinney doesn't seem to realize is that Charlotte does host a variety of musicians and music lovers. As one example, visit the Evening Muse in North Davidson just about any Wed-Sat (and occasional Mondays, Tuesdays or Sundays, when the National Touring acts who need a smaller, great sounding room come through), and you'll see a musical community that has been building steadily for the last few years. Standing room only shows are becoming more and more the norm, as people are finding out how much fun one could have and not have to drive "three hours." A variety of all types of genres are represented in this town, and the talent is truly amazing. What needs to happen is instead of complaining about what we don't "seem" to have in this town, is to get out and go to the shows and realize the stellar talent that is in your own backyard. Be a positive voice and take your friends out for a night of great rock, country, punk, Americana, singer-songwriter, or whatever your taste — for only a few dollars. Spread the word, meet the musicians, network, support the artists, clubs, stations like WSGE 91.7 who play our local and regional acts, buy the CDs, play them for your friends. Just because someone is playing a smaller venue/club, doesn't mean their talent is any less than the touring artists who come through. They just need someone to hear them. When touring acts realize we do have a thriving musical community and support system, they'll be more inclined to stop here. If you're not experiencing musical riches right here in Charlotte, you may not be looking in the right places.

The Fetish Mentality

Just wanted to commend you on the excellent coverage of Charlotte's Fetish Underground ("The Agony & the Ecstasy," Sam Boykin, April 6). I moved here from NYC Recently and reading your story was analogous to reading the Village Voice.

Maybe even better. I liked the way you provided in-depth research on how and why people get into the Goth scene, and the mentality that drives them to pursue it. It was nice to get another perspective in this closed minded, conservative, fake, so called happy-friendly, corporate whitewashed bank town.

There's a tiny seedling of art, beauty, passion and culture here and I'm happy your work is finally opening up diversity to the South and helping people raise awareness and realize that there's more than just football and NASCAR to live for.
