Live Review: Kenny Chesney w/ Sugarland, Pat Green

Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre, Aug. 2, 2007

The Deal: The best country music line-up (at least in my opinion) shared the stage of the best concert venue in Charlotte (in the readers' and critics' opinions, according to the "Best Of" issue). Translated: Pat Green, Sugarland and Kenny Chesney sang to the sold-out lawn at Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre as everyone sang along.

The Good: Pat Green and Sugarland -- 'nough said. I was more excited about the opening acts than I was the headliner, but slightly unfortunate for me, everyone was more interested in tailgating. People tailgate for a Kenny Chesney concert like it's a football game. There was even a tailgating contest -- people were carrying around wake boards, throwing beach balls and sitting on makeshift sand dunes in the parking lot. Makes sense: Kenny's songs are all about getting drunk, spring break, being barefoot in the sand and having sex for the first time. Thus, his show is more like a party than a concert.

The Bad: The lawn was so crowded, I wandered away from the tour for five minutes, got completely lost from my friends for the first set of Kenny Chesney and tripped over someone passed out in the lawn.

The Verdict: Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre is in fact the "best large concert venue." Note: that is only if you can navigate yourself through the lawn. But if you've been to one Chesney concert you've been to them all. In my mind, it was the Sugarland and Pat Green show.
