LOCAL ISSUE THAT NEEDS MORE ATTENTION
In 2008 alone, Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officers have shot four people, while another died after being Tasered. Within the last decade, I.A. has investigated 20 nonfatal shootings by police officers. More recently, the deaths of Aaron Winchester and Darryl Wayne Turner have made headlines and incited anger in many Charlotte residents. Winchester was shot by police after officers said they observed him reaching for a gun, a detail many witnesses contest. Turner went into cardiac arrest after been Tasered by an officer in early spring. Why should we be fearful of the very people we’re supposed to trust to ensure our safety? Seeing as how the police work for the citizens, if we feel like we can’t trust them, that’s a serious problem.
