It’s hard to condemn efforts to weed out serious criminals. Fortunately, Mecklenburg County Sheriff Jim Pendergraph’s enforcement of federal immigration law isn’t any such effort. It gives local deputies power to initiate the deportation process on anyone arrested, even on such offenses as running red lights and even without a guilty verdict. He’s found an approving audience with Lou Dobbs and Rep. Sue Myrick, folks who aren’t exactly above pandering to xenophobes’ baser instincts.
