Robert Gleiberman

Owner of Gleiberman's Kosher Mart and Restaurant

Unique to Charlotte, Gleiberman's Kosher Mart and Restaurant is dedicated to providing a selection of quality kosher foods to the local Jewish community.

Owned by Jeff and Robert Gleiberman, the eatery/grocery store features an on-site butcher who prepares fresh meats each week, among other amenities. And with a sanitation score of 102, it's clearly all kosher.

Creative Loafing: What problems have you faced with the sour state of the economy?

Robert Gleiberman: Our products are made in-house and ordered from New York. We are only able to make orders once a week or one every two weeks. Due to the long delivery, our prices have increased regularly. When we are out of a product, we are out. We can't call a local purveyor to come drop something off to us. We are strictly kosher and providing specific products to our clientele.

We hope our customers will take care of all their kosher needs with us. It is a convenience to have us here now, but without their business, it could become a hardship -- we need their support to be here.

What day-to-day tasks do you face to remain kosher?

We are strictly kosher in order to appeal to all customers. At all times during business hours, we must have someone fully kosher in house. My brother and his wife typically take this role, but they are currently out of town. We have invited a woman from the synagogue who has agreed to sit in the restaurant for the time being. As a co-owner, I am not even allowed to turn on the oven in my own restaurant. We also receive inspections daily and are under the supervision of a respected Rabbi.

What is your favorite item in the store?

Our deli has great products. Once you try a corned beef or pastrami sandwich, you won't want to eat any other kind. Our meats are from New York and made in-house, served hot, and definitely the most popular.
